Morning Buzz for Friday 2/8/08 - Do not call

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are pushing for changes to the “Do Not Call” registry. The Associated Press reports the Senate is poised to send a bill to President Bush that makes the list a permanent fixture, overturning a Federal Trade Commission rule requiring you to re-register every 5 years. Telemarketers face thousands of dollars in penalties if they violate the law.

Have you registered for the “Do Not Call” registry? Would you be glad if the law passed and you didn’t have to register every 5 years? Or… do you not mind getting calls from telemarketers?

Tell me what you think! Maybe I’ll read your comment on the air Monday!

My wife made me register..I miss those people calling me..it was like a never ending game..I was winning when she made me register..

Cussing these people does no good...telling them you aint interested has absolutely no effect..even hanging up on them will not work...they will call you back when you least expect it..

The best thing you can do is let them run through their lil sales pitch..and act semi-interested..only to break their hearts at the end of it all..

..or even worse..

I got a call one night..all I said was “Hello”..and they took it from there..reading off their lil 5x7 card..so I laid the phone down and went on about my business..15 or 20 minutes later I came back and sure enough..they were still doing a fine job of selling me something..

So I pick up the phone..made a clicking sound and said “Hello? Sorry I had a call on the other line...who did you say you wanted to talk to?”

You could almost hear the tears running down that girl’s face..

My wife thought that was cruel and I was enjoying this game far too much...I dont think she is aware that you have to register every 5 years tho..and I sure aint gonna tell her..

I’m still getting fan mail from the last comment of mine that you read on the air...some of it from as far out as Bennettsville..takes them 3 stamps to get it here..wink

Just pay a little extra for caller id and when it says unknown name don’t pick it up. But if you do there’s always a pause and you end up saying hello? a few times. And if you’re in the mood you can always mess with them like many people that I know and turn it into an amusing experience.

The “Do Not Call” registry does give you the home field advantage..

You can call them and they aint allowed to call me back..wonder how long it would be before they registered…

Ted I feel so sorry for poor Lyra now..she said she doesnt have a home phone..

It must be tough moving here...knowing you aint gonna have any friends to call you..so why bother getting a phone put in..

This will also explain why she has someone else tracking her pizza for her..smile

I should have clarified… I have a cell phone wink

HaHaHa!

Well dont give us the number on here..some of these people could be telemarketers..

I don’t think that advertisers should bother someone via the telephone, and that carries over to the e-mails. I normally receive 3-400 spam ads every evening when I am able to go to my personal e-mails at home. In reference to the phones, however, I have an answering machine always answering my phone. When ANY calls come in, they are all screened. I’m a Land Surveyor here in SC (and NC), and work outside all day, so I normally don’t get a chance to listen to my phone during the day. I think that the registration of these types of calls should be allowed, and forever.

I have to wonder how effective this type of sales advertising is anyway..I know it is aggrivating..but does it really work?

Does the American public seriously buy something based on a phone call from a complete stranger?

I know that I wouldnt..

I suppose however that this form of sales is somewhat better than them actually coming to your door like traveling salesmen used to do..

I to have only a cell phone- Funny thing with that one is that the only sales calls I got on it were in Spanish. They were taped messages though no live person. So I used the call block feature in my phone.

The only calls I get are not from telemarketers but Distributors. We can only order things from certain vendors. I don’t have the heart to tell them this. So most of the time I just tell them to Ship up a catalog and be done with it. I am a Maintenance Man at a Hotel.

Wolf that one is not as cruel as what a friend used to do to them.

There was one where he pretended to try to sell them something. “You buy mine then I buy yours” was what he called that game.
The other one was the depressed Lonely guy looking for a date.
The worst one he ever did was what he called the “SUICIDE GUY” That one almost backfired. Had he not have had 2 phone lines. They actually called the law and the law called him to check on him. They laughed when he told them about the gag and told him never to do it again.

James..any friend of yours that acts like that..is a friend of mine..I love it! wink

Them cell phones is somethin’else..

My wife bought me a new one awhile back..I can all but

watch a movie on that thing..

I aint never got a call on it tho..course I wouldnt know

how to answer it if I did..it has more controls than a

BlackHawk helicopter..

I think wives use this tactic to make their husbands

look stupid..which in return makes them look smarter..

At this rate..by the end of next week..she should be

working for NASA...and I’ll be making guest appearances

on Hee Haw...smile

My, my how can you be so cruel to someone just trying to make a living?
I also wonder about the effectiveness of trying to sell something or an idea
when the person is likely ticked off by the call. I have had some experience calling
to promote a political candidate and I was amazed at how congenial most people are in Florence. Caller ID is your best defense if you don’t want to be bothered.

I suppose it is easy because it is seen by many as a form of entering their home in an unwanted fashion..

I’d treat a driver for Texaco the same way if he drove his truck into my house..even tho he is just trying to make a living too..

Home is a safe haven..where the outside world shouldnt be allowed to bother you..

I never claimed to be politically correct..

Well, I kind of like the calls. No one ever calls me except for my probation officer.

Y’all can call me too. My number is 800-362-6665 or 800-DO A-MOOK

I’m harmless. Ask Patricia.

Posted by  on  02/08  at  11:25 AM

I’m a bit more protective..

If you cant afford to reach me on the 1-900-Cry Wolf number..then just call the TV station and leave your comments with Lyra..she can afford to call me..Anchors make tons of money..

Try not to call her while she is on the air..she dont like that..

I aint even allowed to email her during the news..wink

Another reason to stay off the phone.

My girlfriend in Effingham, no, Timmonsville sent me this.

I read somewhere that American telemarketers can call Canadian residents..the “Do Not Call” registry doesnt allow Canadian numbers on the list..

This form of sales must work to some degree if they go to this much trouble..

But I just dont see how..

Hey Lyra i Think They should have a Do Not E-mail
List Also. so when Wolf Tries to post or send E-mail it gets returned to sender, so wolf can keep himself amused. but then again he does need something to keep him busy right wolfie !!

Posted by  on  02/08  at  07:18 PM

She had me on her “Do Not Email” list..before she even came to TV 13...they got where they add that into their bonus package now..

I heard they could either have a parking space or have me blocked from their email..

Lyra parks on the other side of McDonalds..right beside Nickie..Martha..and Bob..wink

Posted by  on  02/08  at  07:32 PM

Well what kind of car does Lyra then? Is it one of those that drives by it’self? if so let’s go Cruise around,Take it and let the robot gas pump fill it up first...Hey i know we can deliver pizza’s in it..better yet get a remote control and send the car out to deliver the pizza’s...and track the Whole Darn thing on the internet...Maybe thats why Lura came here from tn.was It? To get away from that commotion...It would be kind of like stepping down in a way though.. i would think the tn.television market is Better than the M.B Florence Market....Hope Lyra didn’t take demotion to come to the Grand Strand,Pee Dee Area ...Oh Well It’s Good to see a Smiling face thats what i like about the wbtw Crew.. a fEW of them anyway....I think lauren on 15 is afraid her face would stay that way if she did smile.....your turn now.....what about them Apples???

Posted by  on  02/11  at  04:26 PM

I aint never seen her in a car..last time I saw her she was riding a red Moped with a green stripe on it..

..it had one of those lil baskets on the handlebars..

..I’m guessing to carry them apples in..but that is just a guess..so dont quote me to it..wink
