Morning Buzz for Friday 2/22/08 - Cell Phone Ads

Advertisements specific to your current location may be coming to your cell phone soon thanks to savvy mobile companies and GPS technology. Earlier this month, CBS Mobile announced it plans to try this out in the US (it’s already being done in Japan). The International Herald-Tribune reports CBS mobile wants to make it easier for advertisers to target consumers as they’re about to walk by stores or restaurants. Cell phone customers must sign up for this service… in order to receive the ads. And, executives say the ads are delivered anonymously and your location is not stored.

What do you think about this new advertising technology?

Let’s discuss.

Not for me but I guess it has its place for some folks. I’m more concerned about them finding a way to send the ads without having signed up. More invasion of our private time. Don’t get me started on telemarketers.

I would not really have a problem with them since I have a tracphone model 10 series with incoming texts no charge. I think most people would not be opposed to it if they were not charged. Actually I get them already for promotions from my carrier.

I can see this being useful or annoying… depending on the situation.  If you are in an unfamiliar city it may help you find a place to eat or shop.  But, if you’re busy, you may not want to have to check you cell phone everytime it rings or beeps—only to find out it’s an ad.
