Morning Buzz for 2/11/08 - Gas-pumping robot
Do you dread having to get out of your car to pump gas? Well, soon you may not have to … thanks to a robot. Last week, Dutch inventors unveiled a car-fueling robot they say is the first of its kind. Here’s how it works: The car is registered upon arrival at the filling station and then matched to a database of fuel cap designs and types. A robotic arm fitted with multiple sensors extends from a regular gas pump… opens the car’s gas tank cover… unscrews the cap… and places the nozzle in the gas tank!CBS News talked to the robot’s creator, Nico van Staveren, a Dutch gas station operator. He says he came up with the idea while on a farm when he saw a robotic arm milking a cow. He says it works for any car whose tank can be opened without a key, and whose contours and dimensions have been recorded to avoid scratching.
He hopes to introduce the robot in a handful of Dutch gas stations by the end of the year. No word yet on when or if the robot will make its way to the US.
I’ll show you video of this today on News 13 this morning. And I want to hear what you think about the gas-pumping robot. Post a comment here! Maybe I’ll read it on the air Tuesday!
