Morning Buzz for 1/24/08 - Think Before You Eat

Health officials in New York City are implementing a plan that would force restaurant chains to post calorie counts for their foods right on the menu, according to the Associated Press. It takes effect at the end of March, and applies to any chain that operates at least 15 separate outlets. This will have an impact on major fast-food chains which make up 10% of the city’s restaurants. Several chains, like McDonalds and Burger King have the information available, but currently don’t list in on the menu boards. City officials hope the move will curb obesity by making people aware how many calories are in some meals.

Do you think this would make you think twice about what you order? Let’s talk about this today. I want to hear from you!

I’ve always maintained a school-boy figure..I wear the same size clothes as I did in high school..and I eat whatever I want..

..this is starting to look like a “worming” issue..

I seriously doubt that even if they closed 10% of the restaurants down in NYC..that it would impact obesity..

..so simply posting calorie counts for their foods right on the menu would have little to no effect at all..

I know tons of people (pun intended) that are a bit overweight..according to today’s standards..and none of them have ever mentioned watching their calories..I have never witnessed them looking on a label to even see how many calories they were about to ingest..

I find it refreshing that not everyone plays by society’s rules..

Reading back over this..I think I was pretty sensitive towards fat people..I’m proud of myself..

Yep..I’m gonna go with this comment..and see where it gets me…;)

It seems like most of us know that some of the foods we like a lot have a lot of calories… and sometimes we just feel like eating them… and we do! wink But, maybe the calorie postings will make some people think twice about what they’re ordering by showing them the numbers.  We’ll just have to wait and see!

Well if we are talking about people that have health issues instead of just someone who weighs more than others think they should..

Then I think the calorie posting is a great idea..and hopefully it helps those who really need to watch those calories to maintain a healthy life..

I also think that even with those erasers of yours..you are still one classy lady..smile

I don’t think it’s the calorie count of the fast foods we eat.  We had fast food in the 60s and 70s, yet no obesity epidemic.  It seems to me that portion sizes have gotten out of control.  The food is the same as it was 30 years ago.

Anyone remember Jurassic Park?  Remember when McDonald’s followed with the “Jurassic Size” value meal.  If my memory serves me correctly, this was the birth of the value size meal and ultimately the birth of the obesity epidemic.  It was such a big hit that other chains picked up on it and we have been gaining weight ever since.

That’s my take…what’s yours.

I do believe that you just hit the nail on the head Chris..

Even with soft drinks..what used to be a nice sized drink has turned into a massive 32 oz. nightmare..not only to try to control while driving but your bladder now has to evolve into a holding tank..just like them on the big RV’s..

I dont know if we as a whole could return to normal sized portions at this point tho..too much advertising as led us away from what is healthy..almost to the point of greedy..

What’s it going to be like 10 years from now ?

If I’m at McDonalds then I’m not worried about calories. I’m there to eat and eat bad. So, no. It wouldn’t effect me one bit. FWIW. I eat very little fast food because of the limited healthy choices. Wendys chicken sandwich is about all I ever order. Now. Question for Lyra. I overslept today. Got up in a rush. Hurrying to get breakfast for my 6th grader and myself. We had just sat down at the table to enjoy a bowl of Corn flakes and a cold beer. Well, I could have swore I heard you call a Pastor, a “bastor”. Which came out sounding like bastard. 11 y/o heard it and spit beer everywhere.

Before everyone gets in an uproar. I’m only kidding. We had Captain Crunch.

Speaking again of portion sizes, here’s some concrete evidence that portion sizes are much larger than they once were.  Have you noticed that today’s cupholders are too small for many of the drinks we get at fast food establishments?  That’s because a ‘medium’ drink today is the same size a ‘large’ was 20 years ago.  A 32 oz. ‘Big Gulp’ was unheard of in 1985.

Maybe seeing how bad the food is for us will influence some people to make better choices.  It could also cause restaurants to decrease portion sizes in order to make their food appear healthier.

At the end of the day, ‘biggie’ meals only exist because people buy it.  Maybe if a few people see the labels and make better choices, that demand will drop off and we’ll see portions return to healthier sizes.

I agree..I just think that it would take a campaign far greater than listing the calories to reverse a nations actions..

My wife isnt from America and she was horrified when she came to this country..she couldnt believe how we were really into this “bigger is better” thing over here..

I seriously think alot of the problem isnt what we “do”..it is what we “dont do”..

With today’s technology..people dont do as much physical stuff as they used to..they play video games..iphones..ipods..

..we used to play baseball..football..go hiking..camping..physical stuff..

The lack of some form of exercise is likely as much to blame as the biggie meals are..combined the effects would be even worse..

Funny thing but true…
In foreign countries what is our Medium Soda is their Large. Same is true about Fries.

Mainly though… I think it goes back to the old saying “EVERYTHING IN MODERATION” or “Too Much Of A Good Thing Is Too Much.“

IF you want a prime example- Watch the movie “SUPER SIZE ME” That is a wakeup call to the fast food industry.

We already put these on items we buy at the Grocery store.
WHO REALLY READS THEM.
That .99 cent bag of chips that we eat while watching sports… Only 100 Calories yeah right… Serving Size per BAG 8 servings.

The 20 ounce Cola in the bottle… LOL.. 2.5 servings.

Low Calorie/Fat cookies…
Says 80 calories… serving size 2 cookies.

Just check it out.

I remember two years ago, at least one fast-food restaurant re-sized its menu.  Small was now a medium size, medium was a large, etc.  So, when I order the “small” combo… it’s really a medium.

I still cant get over the fact that I have never had this conversation before..in all my life..

That means that me and James Bond are probably the only two people who lead that exciting a life..that we havent slowed down enough to explore this area..

I’m just gonna have to back Queen up on this one..and promote exercise..

“Fat bottom girls..you make the rockin’ world go round…get on your bikes and ride..“

Lyra, I know Wendy’s small is like McDonald’s medium when it comes to drinks and fries.  I always make the mistake at Wendy’s and ask for medium and I end up getting a huge drink instead of the normal size medium.  I’m pretty sure Hardee’s is that way too.  But, I don’t eat at Hardee’s too often, so I’m not sure.

James..there is no way I could pick my meal by that Nutritional chart..I tried..

I just got to see for the first time what these poor people must go through..worrying more about your calorie allowance than your money allowance..I found it almost impossible..

I tried 6 times to come up with a healthy meal that would fill me up..or at least hold me over until my next meal..I would starve to death if that is the way that I had to pick my meals..

Ashlee..the last time I was in Hardees it was that way too..and their meat patties were bigger..Angus beef..I believe it is..

We dont eat at these places very often..maybe 3 or 4 times a year..we do KFC..Sub Shop..Capt. D’s..and even they are rare….but years ago when the wife and I worked down in Charleston these places supplied 2 of our meals per day..

They get real old..real fast..and it probably the reason we dont crave them nowadays..
