Morning Buzz for 1/21/08 - Myrtle Beach Debates
Today Myrtle Beach is getting ready for its second Presidential Debate of 2008. Tonight’s Democratic Debate takes place at the Palace Theater at 8pm. Similar to the Republican debate a week and a half ago, hundreds of journalists from across the world will make their way to the Grand Strand. And, the candidates will be welcomed to the area by the second "Mount Myrtle" sand sculpture. Thanks to the debates, some local business say they are seeing a lot more business during what is usually one of the slowest months of the year.
Will the debates have an impact on you? Do you think all the media attention will benefit our area and help bring more events here? Are you worried about what traffic will be like today? Let’s talk more about this between 5 and 7 this morning.

Hello Lyra,
My sister and I are a average, middle-class, Myrtle Beach, SC residents who were thrilled to receive invitations to attend the democratic debate. We were so excited to be part of this once in a life time, historic event, until yesterday; My sister Susan received a phone call from a Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce representative telling her that she was no longer welcome to attend the debate. After several phone calls, a local newspaper reporter was able to find out that a decision was made Saturday to accommodate some, apparently “more important”, people. Something just isn’t right about this. The Democratic Party has based its platform on standing up for the average person. Isn’t it ironic, that because my sister is “only” an average, middle-class citizen her ticket and her chance to be a part of this historic event has been taken away and given to someone “more important”. We are so, completely disillusioned that this act of “classism” is happening during a Democratic event that we are seriously considering not voting on Saturday. How can we believe that an average person can truly make a difference when this kind of thing is allowed to go on unchecked?
