Morning Buzz for 1/10/08—Myrtle Beach Debates

Today, many people in our area are buzzing about the GOP debate set to take place tonight at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. On Wednesday, members of the national media flew in to Myrtle Beach. Little by little, satellite trucks and news crews started filling up the parking lot and grassy areas along Oak Street. I drove by the convention center and there was already a lot of activity. Mostly spectators, taking a look at the "Mount Myrtle Beach" sand sculpture.

Myrtle Beach is hosting both Republican and Democratic presidential debates in preparation for South Carolina’s early primaries later this month. The Chamber of Commerce and area businesses have been preparing for a large influx of people. Some stores and restaurants expect to see a big increase in business thanks to the debates. And traffic in and around the convention center will be redirected at times, and definitely very busy.

What kind of impact do you think the debate today, and the one 11 days later will have on our area? What kind of impact do you think they will have on you? Do you plan to watch the debates? Do you think you’ll run into traffic on your way to work? Did you snap a picture of the cool sand sculpture?

I would think that the biggest impact would be traffic. It’ll be like both bike weeks and Christmas all wrapped up into one..except worse..bikers have manners and arent near as loud as political people.

It’ll be interesting to watch the numbers climb on highway accidents and deaths during these periods.

I wont be watching the debates, I’ll depend heavily on my favorite news-people to keep me updated. Pretty much the same way that I cant bring myself to suffer through watching a golf game when it is easier to just catch Matt Lincoln for the highlights.

Hopefully being over an hour away from the beach, we wont feel the effects of increased traffic, however I do predict a slight decrease in alcohol related drinks over the following weeks, that could stem out to surrounding counties. Political people drink…ALOT!

I would love to come to town and be a part of the democratic debates fervor.  Where can I go to be a part of it without having to be in the building with the actual debates?  I have searched the net and can’t find anything.
Thanks,

I always count on News 13 Ms. Lyra…

I noticed this morning that the lovely Michelle Carolla was staking out the bagel shop..which in my eyes is an all time low for her..those sort of actions seem more like something Cecil Chandler would do…

I’m curious tho..as I’m not “political people”..I have the drinking portion of it down..but have trouble with the rest of the requirements..

What exactly is it that draws all of these people to these debates ? Have the debates gotten better than those in the past..are promises being kept..or has this become yet another non-contact sport of keeping up with how far behind..say.. Team Hillary is in the play-offs ?

I hope they don’t publish lists of the topics to the candidates. I always like to see who can be on their toes. In the past I have seen debates where the candidates read off of cards where the press agents wrote answers for them.

I couldnt help but notice that even Bob Juback compared these debates to sports on the evening news…

He used terms like..touchdowns..playoffs..even called this debate..“The Super Bowl”..

I still dont understand it any better than I did before..but if “Mr. Mini Cooper” can think that this is just a couple of big ole’ pre-season games to determine who goes to the “Presidential Bowl”..then I’m inclined to just stand over there with him on this one…

We love ya Bob!;)
