Morning Buzz: Congress looks at shutting down some online pharmacies

You’ve probably received the emails offering you some sort of prescription drug over the internet, or even seen the ads online while surfing the web. The Associated Press says a Columbia University study finds that drugs that are not supposed to be sold without a prescription are sold all too easily without one on the internet. Researchers say more than ¾ of websites that offer highly addictive medications (oxycodone, for example) don’t require a prescription.

CBS News reports the study found 159 different web sites were offering these medications, but only two of those were certified as legitimate pharmacies. The rest are what are described as “rogue sites” – many which are operated outside the U.S. And, authorities say buying drugs from these uncertified online pharmacies can be very dangerous.

Earlier this year, the Senate passed a bill that would ban the delivery of regulated drugs bought over the internet without a prescription. That bill is pending in the house.

Do you think the government is doing enough to try to regulate, and make the public aware, of the dangers of these “rogue sites?”

Judging by the number of emails offering this service..that I get on a daily basis..

I’d say No..they are not doing near enough and should tighten down on them..

Prescription drugs can be as deadly as street drugs..and who knows exactly where they are coming from..

It wouldnt surprise me if some of those so-called companies are being run out of someone’s basement or a shed out back..

Even as much as I hate the high cost of medical care..a doctor needs to be involved with prescribing drugs that is actually caring for you…and knows the specific medicine and amounts to help you…

This concludes my required serious time…:)

I can’t believe it is legal to do this. Look at what happened to Heath Ledger and Anna Nicole Smith… and they had prescriptions, albeit from various doctors. Imagine what people are self-prescribing???

I wouldn’t trust buying an aspirin on the Internet because you don’t know WHAT it may have in it, or the environment that it was made in.

I’ve ordered online from a Canadian pharmacy. I’ve had no problems and saved money.
