Morning Buzz: Buying big-ticket items with coins

An Ohio man used 16 cans full of coins to pay for half of a $16,000 truck. The Associated Press reports workers at the suburban Cincinnati dealership spent an hour and a half counting out all the dimes, quarters, half-dollars and dollar coins. They were rolled… not just lose in the can. 70 year old James Jones and his wife wrote a check for the other half. According to the AP, James says he doesn’t trust paper money.

Do you have a coin collection that you use to pay for things?

He doesn’t trust paper money? Must be some kind of phobia or he likes to bury his money in the yard and he is afraid it could get wet and rot. Another possibility is he had an experience with counterfeit money.

$8000 sitting around not earning interest is not good. Oh well, it’s his money.

Yep. Collect them all year and cash them in at the local Food Lion for groceries. It’s usually anywhere from 80-100 dollars.
