Morning Buzz: A green cell phone tower

There’s a new “green” cell phone tower in Wisconsin – it’s appropriately in the Green Bay area. CBS affiliate WFRV reports Cellcom activated the tower on Earth Day. The tower is powered mostly by the sun (through solar panels), but it also uses a wind mill, hydrogen fuel cells and batteries. They serve as a back-up when it’s cloudy outside for a long period of time.

It seems like we are finding lots of new ways to go green. Personally, I try to do my part by recycling. What do you think of this new eco-friendly cell tower?

I’d love to see a cost comparison on this tower..I’d be willing to bet that the costs are out of this world...like everything else to do with “going green”..

I think “going green” is all marketing hype anyway..it is the newest form of being “politically correct”..

Most “green” ideas are stupid ... if they were good ideas people would already be doing them...and you wouldn’t need the government to step in and MAKE people do it…

I think this whole “green” thing has too much of a “cult” feel to it...it started in some marketing firm..it is going through the “office yuppie” phase at the moment..and is supposed to find it’s way down to normal folks..like myself..at some stage…

Aint gonna happen..I’m gonna “go brown”..or some other color..cause it is easier..cheaper and goes against the “group think” mentality..

I have to agree with Wolf. Another load of crap.
Right now. I don’t give a rats hiney about green. What I want to see is lower prices for fuel and every other thing effected by this bs. I don’t care if we have to drill in Alaska. The seals will get used to it. Hell, for all that I care they can put an oil rig in the middle of the Grand Canyon. Just stop the bleeding now.

Are there any green ideas you guys think are ok? wink
How about some of the green fuel options?

Posted by  on  04/29  at  09:16 AM

Do you think green fuel options are going to appear like magic ? Walt Disney is the only one who has magic these days..

The amount of oil and diesel used to produce and transport green products sorta defeats the effort..so to speak..

I find it funny that years ago we ran an ad on TV with an Indian standing by the road..a carload of kids came out and threw trash out..landing at the Indians feet..the camera then got a shot of his face..he had a tear rolling down his face....nothing changed…

Now along comes this “going green” campaign and everyone on the planet is falling in line like the “sheeple” that they were born to be…

Bottom line..life is too short...enjoy it or ride the “campaign train”..choice is yours…

I’m not the poster child for “ Better Living”....I just happen to be here for a very short visit..I promise not to make too big a mess while I’m here...but I aint Superman..I didnt come here to save the planet..

You state that you do your part by recycling..

This is great...but only to put your mind at ease that you are helping to save the planet..

Now instead of stopping with you recycling..go a step or two further..Let’s start with the Garbage truck that comes around to pick up your trash...is it a hybrid? Well No! It burns diesel..and alot of it too..

Now the garbage truck delivers the trash to the respected landfills...or collection points for the recycled trash..Are they ran with hybrid vehicles or solar panels..even hydrogen fuel cells? Well No! They are ran with electricity..gas guzzling vehicles or diesel equipment…

I forgot to mention that “trust” is a big part of recycling...how much effort does a person making minimum wage actually put into extending your recycling process? Well..very lil I assure you..

So for your own peace of mind and the ability to sleep nights..by all means..Please recycle…

I can think of one.
Let’s collect all of the South Carolina EBT Cards. Require able bodied South Carolinans to pick up trash on the side of the road. We could take the aluminum cans and recycle them. This would generate some income to help pay welfare for those who truly need it.

I have to agree with the boys I’m afraid Lyra.  Every option that is put on the market to help the environment is priced outside the budgets of 90% of americans.  They cannot afford to by the hybrid vehicles, the solar power, even the flurocent light bulbs.  There is no point trying to get people to go green, if it is an unachievable goal.  All it does is make you feel more insignificant in a country that supports only the wealthy.  Oil companies can design all the alternative fuels they want, but unless you can afford the new car that runs on that fuel - it is useless.  They need to fix the economy before they can hope that the people living in this country can fix the world.

I actually love the way this recycling thingie came to be..

It wasnt about saving the planet..

Big company is selling their product in glass bottles..one day an engineer comes in and says “If we sold our product in plastic bottles..we could pocket more money..

..and so this comes to be…

Years go by and another engineer comes in and says"If we can convince the public to “GIVE” us back our bottles..we can the “RE-SALE” them and make twice the money..

*LOL*

..and it worked…

You all make some interesting points.  Thanks for posting!

I’m not here to agree or disagree with anything anyone has said, but I do want to add some food for further thought.

First, everything that involves new technology is expensive at first.  Take the computer you are typing or widescreen tv for example.

Secondly, plastic is made from petroleum.  That means that when we make new plastic instead of recyling, we increase the strain on our oil prices and ultimately drive up gas prices.  This also means it NEVER decomposes.  That’s not politics, that’s science.

Finally, as high tech as our cars are these days, the engine that powers them is 1920s tecnology. I’d say we are due for an update!

Baby steps, folks.  Baby steps.  Great things take time. grin

“new technology is expensive at first”

.."expensive" is fast becoming “not an option” for most people these days..

“we increase the strain on our oil prices and ultimately drive up gas prices”

..If the wind changes direction..the price of gas goes up..look back over some of their stupid excuses for rising prices..

“we are due for an update”

..again this comes with a high price tag that too many cannot afford…

Going with this train of thought leaves most of our population by the way side..they cant keep up so leave them behind..

That’s not politics or science..it’s a cold hard fact…

I see your point Wolf about technology being expensive.

However, electricity was once for rich people.  Short of the homeless population, even the poorest of poor have basic electricity.

As for gas prices and how fickle they are, I feel ya!  I recycle because if we don’t, the earth is going to be one heaping pile of soda bottles if we don’t and that’s not what I want my generation to be remembered for.

Posted by  on  04/29  at  12:30 PM

I dont believe that you are even afforded the option of living in your home with no electricity these days..DHEC would run you out of it..

I think the problem is that we got too big..too fast..and now we are scraping the bottom of the barrel to come up with an escape plan..

It’s right there in front of us…

Sometimes to move forward..you have to go backwards and do quite a bit of side-steppin’..

Often times technology creates newer..even bigger problems...than already exist..we’ve seen this in the past..

I think during the time that I am drawing my last breath..what my generation is remembered for..will be the farthest thing from my mind..

Dont get me wrong..my views on all of this are exactly that..my views..

I dont frown on anyone who is trying to better the world as a whole..

I do however try to keep it real..smile

Hmmm.  A cess-pool of Soda Bottles.  Here’s an idea - just stop buying soda. It is bad for you anyway - and water in bottles is just a complete waste of resources in a country such as this - drink your tap water.  That will solve the bottle issue, and the petroleum product issue in regards to plastic bottles.  Face it, we are a throw away society.  Take Baby diapers- once Moms soaked and washed them, now they buy disposable ones, and throw them away.  You can fix one problem, and you will get another million hot on it’s heels.  You know, congratulations to those who try to recycle, but as stated earlier, are you really contributing?  Unless you can actually follow the path of your recycled items, how do you know where they are really going?

In the words of George Michael :

“Well I guess it would be nice
If I could touch your body
I know not everybody
Has got a body like you”

Wait a sec..let me fast forward it a bit..wink

‘Cause I gotta have faith…
Mmm, I gotta have faith
‘Cause I gotta have faith, faith,
Mm ‘cause I gotta have faith-a-faith-a-faith

*LOL*

It is environmental illiteracy and a complete lack of forward thinking to ignore the need to halt and then reverse population growth in the context of climate change, congestion, unaffordable housing, and resource depletion.
