Lower state predictions
Here's how I see Saturday's lower state title games shaping up:Class 2A girls: Marion over Silver Bluff. I think the Swamp Foxes have too much firepower. Geneika Brantley and Candace Wright have been a lethal one-two scoring punch this season and Marion has more than a few other players who can pick up the scoring slack. Also, their defense is outstanding.
Class 2A boys: Mullins over Wade Hampton. Last year's heart-breaking loss to Burke in the lower state final provided motivation for the Aucs all season. They won't let opportunity slip away twice. Eric Smith, Saquan McFarland and the rest of the players will come out strong.
Class A boys: Calhoun County over Hemingway. Talk about your marquee matchups. A lot of people are saying this is the real state title game, and I'd have to agree. Last year's battle was one for the record books. But, it's hard to pick against the three-time defending champs. Hemingway is the only team that could pull off the upset. I just think they'll fall a little short again.
