In the end, Filyaw shows his true colors

We weren't surprised when the Associated Press bulletin came down shortly before noon Tuesday.

Vinson Filyaw, the Kershaw County man accused of kidnapping a 14-year-old girl and raping her in an underground bunker had plead guilty, rather than face a jury. We'd been tipped off by our CBS affiliate in Columbia that a plea agreement was potentially in the works.

Filyaw pleaded guilty to kidnapping and all ten counts of criminal sexual conduct - one for each day he held the girl captive last year. He also pleaded guilty to impersonating a police officer
and possessing an incendiary device. Each criminal sexual conduct charge carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison. He'll be sentenced Wednesday morning.

Here's what I think. Prison is too good for Filyaw.

In my opinion, he is the personification of evil. Dressed as a police officer, he stalked and preyed upon the victim in this case, much like a wolf tracks down a sheep. He has admitted through his own writings that he planned and plotted his crime every step of the way. What he didn’t count on was the fact that she would not allow herself to continue being his victim. She used her intelligence, and will to survive to outwit him, by sending text messages to her mother alerting her and the authorities where she could be found.

I am the father of two little girls. For me, they represent innocence and hope in it purest form. When monsters like Filyaw attack a child, they attack all of us.

As a parent, it’s not easy knowing men like Vinson Filyaw are out there and ready to take that innocence away for their own perverted pleasures.

In the end, Filyaw showed his true self – taking the easy way out, rather than face his accuser, and justice.
