Hurricane Season is Here

It's here… hurricane season stared Sunday. Now is the time to review your family’s hurricane plan. Decide whether or not you will evacuate, or how big the storm has to be before you head inland. Areas west of Highway 31 will not get a storm surge, but hurricanes also bring high winds, tornadoes and heavy rain that causes flooding. If you plan on evacuating, know your evacuation route, and figure out where you will go. If you are going to stay, you will need a hurricane survival kit. Your kit should include everything you will need to survive without electricity and running water for three days. Make sure you have fresh batteries for flashlights and radios. Before the storm hits, secure any loose object outside of your home. Trim trees or shrubbery that may damage your home. Before evacuating, turn off the electricity, gas and water to your house. If you live in a mobile home, a high rise or an area where an evacuation has been ordered, you should leave. When evacuating, bring any medication you may need. Bring anything you need to care for a child. You will also need to make arrangements for your pets, because they are not allowed in official shelters. If you evacuate, any information you need about the hurricane and how it affected our area will be online at http://www.scnow.com. We will be streaming our storm coverage live online with weather conditions and aftermath. We will let you know when it is safe to return, and when any closed roads have re-opened.
