Hitting the Lincs - The Ocean Course at Kiawah
While the country was wishing itself "Happy Birthday" this weekend, I indulged myself in a special gift - playing The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, nationally regarded as the #1 course in the state of South Carolina. As I'm thinking about this course, I'm reminded of the great quote from the epic film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways... One one-thousand! Two one-thousand! Three one-thousand! Four one-thousand!" You get the idea.
Yes the Ocean Course does live up to its billing. The entire back nine you can see the Atlantic Ocean, and for the last three you basically play right on top of the sand dunes.
And yes, there is a lot of sand. Much more sand then you could ever picture on a golf course. In fact, this Saturday I went to the actual beach, but the next day had more sand covering me from the OC.
And there is a lot of wind. I've never had less of an idea about where my ball was going to go. They tell me that you can never tell what direction the wind is going to travel... and unfortunately we drew the dreaded crosswind on Sunday. Which means, you were just helpless.
Usually on the HIL's I like to point out some of the holes that I particularly liked, but that would be a waste of time here. Every hole is memorable, and incredibly difficult. And every hole is utterly gorgeous.
The former home of a Ryder Cup, and the future home of a PGA Championship, the Ocean Course at Kiawah is truly amazing, and you should do anything you can possibly do to play it.
