Hitting the Linc’s - Barefoot Resort (Norman Course)
Hitting the Linc's - Barefoot Resort (Norman Course)Welcome to a brand new offshoot of What Lincoln is Thinkin'... it's called Hitting the Linc's. Every week or so I'll review a golf course that I've played recently either on the Grand Strand or in the Pee Dee. And of course, if you've played it, you can tell me what you think as well.
Before I get into the first review, here's some of my golf background. I picked up the game about five years ago, and have slowly improved over that time. Since coming to Myrtle Beach, I try to play about once every two weeks. I have a 20 handicap.. so, yes, I'm a hacker. But I'm going to do my best to play these courses as well as I can, to give you, the true blog visitor, a good review of each course. But keep in mind, there's a good chance I may not be playing each ball from the fairway.
Onto the first review: This past Tuesday I played one of the four courses at Barefoot Resort - The Norman Course. Dave Genevro and the good people at Barefoot are still dealing with some aftermaths from the wildfire - the Love and Fazio courses are still closed as they rebuild the bridges that burned down. Dave tells me that they are close to opening back up.
There are five tee's to choose from at Norman, and due to my, and my partners', high handicap we played from the middle tees. That extra set of tees really makes the course fairly short. So if you're a high handicapper, but have good distance on your drives, I'd recommend the second tees, (the black).
Just because it played short from those tees does not mean it played easy. Three of the par five's, even with great drives, require three shots to the green because the green is protected by large water or marsh hazards. At least two of the par three's, while playing short, still were extremely difficult to gauge distance because of elevated or descending greens. But difficulty is good. Just make sure to factor in that wind.
I've never driven around the housing development section of Barefoot Resort before, so I was surprised how many homes and condos that were back there. Despite that, you really had to look around to notice them, they were not on top of the course in any way. Also, if you are a fan of botany or landscaping, I dare you to go out and count all the different trees, bushes, flowers and other assorted plant life. I recommend just looking at them, not hitting your shots in them. However, that is one way to get a closer look.
Everything was in fabulous shape, but that pretty much goes without saying when you're talking Barefoot. My favorite holes are the few that overlook the waterway, including the difficult par 3 10th, and magnificent par 3 16th.
However, I could do without the 290 yard par four on the back nine that has about 15 bunkers that cover almost the entire fairway. I mostly hate the three of them that I had to hit out of.
I shot a 96, to extend my rounds-in-double-digits streak to four. Thanks again to Dave, and the entire staff at Barefoot.
