Heartbreaking end for Wright, Vikings
Everyone athlete hopes for that John Elway or Jerome Bettis moment. You know, the one where you finish your career on top, holding on to the championship trophy, and then ride off into the sunset.
A lot of Vikings fans were hoping that that would be the way Rubylee Wright ended her spectacular career.
But it was not meant to be.
The Vikings, hardly at full strength, proved no match for a very balanced C.E. Murray squad in the Class A semifinals. And much like in previous years, the Vikings turned to Wright to carry the load.
And she did, for a while, but as everyone found out last year, it takes a team to win a state title, and Wright couldn't do it alone.
I'm not going to make excuses for Latta. You play with the hand you're dealt and you have to make do. They lost. But don't think the game wouldn't have at least been closer if the Vikings were at full strength.
And as for Wright, probably one of the top three if not the top girls players to ever come from the Pee Dee, had to sit and watch the final three minutes of her illustrious career tick by and there was nothing she could do about it.
Not the script most people were hoping for, but she can take comfort in the fact that she did win a state title, and she's going to get a chance to play for a terrific Division I college.
So even though we have to say goodbye to Rubylee's high school career, I don't think this is the last we'll hear of her.

I’ll tell you what, she is amazing. The way that she can take over a game is incredible. I agree with you Justin, watching her play has been something else. She truly is a human highlight reel!
