Guitar Hero: Aerosmith…. wasted potential
Now, I didn't have high expectations for the game to begin with, but once I rented it.... and beat it in five hours, although I had low expectations for the game they were not even close to being met.My husband and I went to the Game Rush in Socastee on Sunday and rented a couple of games. I rented Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and my husband rented the newest Ninja Gaiden game. I called first dibs on the Xbox so I could play my game for a little while. I played for about three hours then quit for the night.
During that first three hours I played a ton of 70's Aerosmith, maybe one or two from the 80's and got to play Living on the Edge from the 90's. I figured that once I played Living on the Edge that we would start to get into the newer songs from them. Well, I started playing again on Tuesday. Went through song after song. Nothing but a bunch of stuff from the 70's and a few from the 80's. Then, all of a sudden, I had to guitar battle with Joe Perry. While I battled Perry, I started thinking to myself, "This couldn't possible be the end of the game, could it?" I wondered that because if I was battling with Joe Perry, who else was there left for me to battle? The other guitarist from Aerosmith who is in Perry's shadow? Well, no sooner than I asked myself that question, I beat Joe Perry and a congratulatory message came on the screen letting me know that I have beat Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and have unlocked Joe Perry from the characters to use in the game and some kind of stupid looking guitar that doesn't even exist in reality.
After looking at the screen for a few seconds, I screamed, "You've got to be #@!%ing kidding me?! That's all to this game?" I honestly can say that I do not think I've ever been so mad over a game before. I was angry for a number of reasons.
1. I was not even born in the 70's and I'm pretty confident in saying that most of the people who play video games were either born in the 70's and later. While I do know some of their songs from the 70's, there were only one or two I recognized. The majority of the people who are playing video games are in their 20's and below. Living on the Edge was the most recent song I played in career mode. That song was recorded and released in 1993! Once you earned enough money to buy stuff from the vault, you could buy other songs. I bought Pink because it was the only song that I even recognized out of the 10 they had to choose from. Pink was the most recent song on the game from Aerosmith.
2. Each venue for each level of the tour pretty much revolved around artwork from their albums. The final venue had the artwork from the Nine Lives album. Ok, you set the last venue around the cover of one of your most recent albums, but you only have one song from the album on the game and it's not even in career mode?! You've got to be kidding me!
3. The extra songs that are on there, their "inspirational" songs are very few and most people who are in the age range I mentioned above wouldn't even begin to know about them. There are three or four pretty recent songs that people should be able to recognize.
I guess it all boils down to this, I do not believe they had a good variety of their career in the game. What about Dude (Looks Like a Lady), Angel, Janie's Got a Gun, Cryin', Amazing, Crazy, Falling in Love (Is Hard on the Knees), I Don't Want to Miss a Thing or even freaking Jaded?! Those songs were hits for Aerosmith and they completely failed to include them in the game. There are only 41 songs in the game and it's being sold at the great price of $59.99 for the Xbox 360. The game is probably worth $29.99 at the most. Also, I like Aerosmith, but I'm not fanatical about them, so I really didn't get into the game at all. If your a huge fan of Aerosmith, you will love this game. There are tons of videos from the band members talking about their history and what is to come.
I can only hope for more from Guitar Hero: Metallica. If it's anything like the Aerosmith version of the game, it will actually have the exact opposite effect on me than Aerosmith did. I would love nothing more to see all of the Metallica stuff from the 80's and 90's in a game. If they put anything from the St. Anger album in the game, I will refuse to even rent it.
