Grow your own food?

Blog readers, I need your help. I know you guys know everything about this area and I don't so I'm coming to you for assistance.

I'm working on a story about people who have begun growing their own food in response to rising costs of both food and gasoline. However, I'm having a difficult time finding people who do this who are not related to me or anyone else in the newsroom, so my wonderful blog readers, I'm asking for your help.

Do you know anyone who is growing their own produce who would be willing to be interviewed and possibly photographed while talking about their gardens? I'm not really looking for farmers, per se, but more of people living in subdivisions or communities where most of the people work outside the home each day who have begun gardening either to fight the cost of produce or just because they prefer the taste or even simply to get organic produce cheaper than in the stores.

I can be reached at (843) 317-7263 or via email at

Thanks again!

I know several people who have gardens but not because of increased gas prices. They just like gardening and having fresh veggies. Go to the Farmers Market. I’ll bet you find small recreational farmers selling produce for the extra income. I have 2 tomato plants, 2 squash and a jalepeno pepper. You can come over and interview me but you have to bring beer.

I have a pot plant and few weeds..but what the hell..I’ll meet you at Mookie’s..if you are gonna bring the beer..

Everyone in South Carolina grows a garden..it is the law I think..another of which I break..cause I dont grow squat..but then I am filthy rich and couldnt be bothered getting my fingernails dirty..

I have however heard alot of people talking about doing it..but havent seen any of them do it yet..

At least now me and Mookie have your number tho..wink

It doesn’t necessarily have to be due to rising gas prices. I’d like to find unique ways to garden like one man in Hartsville who is gardening with hay bales. He uses them (as best I can understand at this point prior to interviewing him) as a form of potting soil/compost. We’re going to post the story sometime in the next few weeks, hopefully with a link for people to add pictures of their own gardens.

Unique = Frank Johnson..WBTW weatherman

He has a helluva garden..even blogs about it..

He also meets a ton of people and no doubt knows of just such a person..

I’d email him if I were you..Frank is a cool cat..even on a hot day..

I just spoke with him earlier. It does sound like a fantastic garden. I think we all need to go shopping at Frank’s produce store… : )

I think Frank could grow a tomato plant on ceramic tile if he wanted to..I’d love to find his garden one night and pretend to be a rabbit..

Oh Well..it looks like you are back to meeting me and Mookie at his place..

See ya there..wink

Dont forget the beer...lots of it!

I think your right, after this growing season, you will find a lot of folks finding their way to the gardening plot for better veggies and savings. Sorta like the victory gardens of the 40’s. As for gardening myself I do, however, this year our family is growing a different crop (babies) and I don’t get out as much.  I do find that my co-workers like many, I suppose are afraid of the world of plantings and give up on the first try.  I will try anything at least once. There’s even a banana tree in out bathroom! Also several small bonsai, fruit trees, and potted herbs.  You may also want to look at the older generation who where raised by those home gardens.  You may also want to look at the older generation around town who where raised by those home gardens.  It is a great source of comfort and purpose growing their own.  As fuel price continue to rise and there is no end in sight, many foods that we have grown accustomed to having yearound will be limited due to price and availability. So more gardening everyone.
