Going to (North) Carolina

Decided to head out to Kenan Stadium a little early today to do some sightseeing, which is always a good thing to do in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina has always been one of my favorite campuses to visit. No special reason – it’s just a great college atmosphere. So I and a couple of my scribe peers took a stroll from Kenan over to Franklin Street, made a U-turn through campus and walked back between the Old East and Old West dorms to the stadium.
Old East, FYI, is the oldest public university building in the U.S. It has been used as a dormitory its entire history and at one time housed American novelist Thomas Wolfe.
It didn’t take long to hear the recorded voice of James Taylor belting out “Carolina In My Mind.” Of course, two minutes later, I walked by a live band playing Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Gimme Three Steps.”
Didn’t quite mesh.
But things like that are part of what make football Saturdays in the South so interesting even outside the games themselves.
But there is a game to be played here in a little while. The Tar Heels aren’t world beaters, but Butch Davis, in my opinion, is off to a good start in getting UNC turned around. He might eventually make up for some bad coaching hires made over the years in Chapel Hill.
And believe me, the people here have little love for Steve Spurrier, so this should be fun.
For what it’s worth, if South Carolina plays well, the Gamecocks should win this game. But if they have a bad game and UNC gets out to a fast start (see Miami last week), USC could easily leave here feeling blue.
