Generation Next
I recently got wind of an effort to send 150 local veterans to Washington, D.C. to see the (relatively) new World War II Memorial on the National Mall. When I heard this was going on, my first thoughts were: I need to cover this, and I want to go, too! What a great chance to see first-hand the impact such a monument has living legends, who are, sadly, dying at a dizzying rate every day.
Thursday, I went to St. James High School, where, in the midst of busy homecoming activities, the student council met to discuss ways they could help the veterans group raise money.
Granted, we aren't talking about a couple thousand dollars. It will cost at least $36,000 to send these veterans up and back to D.C. in one day on a chartered airplane.
These St. James students were extra-enthusiastic about helping these veterans, and they want to do everything from bake sales to door-to-door sales, to even a "students versus faculty kickball tournament."
It was great to see this latest generation stepping up to help "The Greatest Generation."
Student Council President Jade Iglesias told me this gesture by the students "pretty much seals the deal," when it comes to doing something great for World War II veterans.
I'd say she's right.
This is a great thing for this group of young people to do.
And I bet they'll get it done.
I just hope they go easy on Mr Dowling and the rest of the faculty in that kickball match!
