Gardening Update

As I have mentioned here before, I keep my garden growing, and producing year round. I generally don’t have much to write about in the winter, because things grow so slowly and the garden is not too exciting. As it warms up in the spring, the garden jumps to life, and things are starting to get interesting.

I have already taken up most of the winter plants. The cabbage and collards are gone. I am still growing the garlic, shallots and onions, but they are almost ready to be pulled. The onions are already showing some nice bulbs. Once the garlic stalks flop over, and once the onion shoots start to yellow, it will be time to pull them. The shallots will also be ready once the green part starts to die off. In the meantime, I can cut some of the green tops of the shallots to be used like green onions. I won’t use too much, since the main reason I am growing is for the bulb.

I have been eating lettuce, swiss chard, mustard greens and asparagus. My radishes are nearing the end, after a poor showing this spring.

The most exciting thing in the garden right now are the peas. They were planted in February, and have started flowering and growing pods. The peas will be big enough to eat any day, and since I planted twice as many as last year, I am expecting tons of peas this year.

Tomatoes have been in the ground for 2-3 weeks now, and I still have a bunch of seedlings looking for a place to go. I think I am going to need to dig a new garden area, because I am quickly running out of space. I have two empty rows right now. One will get planted with okra soon, and I am still deciding on the last row.

I’ll keep the updates coming. My peach tree is bursting with quarter sized peaches! My mouth is already watering.
