Gamecocks throwing money at a mediocre cause
Apparently, South Carolina’s football program isn’t suffering in these rocky economic times. This year, the combined salary of South Carolina’s nine assistant coaches will be near $2 million, which is a 17.5 percent increase from 2008. Add to that Steve Spurrier’s $1.75 million per year salary as head coach and South Carolina is paying out around $3.5 million in football salaries.
Shane Beamer, who coaches defensive backs, has received a 31 percent jump in pay to $165,000. Brad Lawing, who coaches the defensive line, and Steve Spurrier Jr., who coaches receivers, have received 14 percent increases and will each make $200,000.
While it might be easy to fume over such high paychecks for football coaches in a struggling economy, I won’t. If the money is there and offered, I can’t blame anyone for taking it.
I just find it kind of funny that the Gamecock faithful continue to throw money at mediocrity. How did the Gamecocks finish last year? After being trounced in their last three games 56-6 by Florida, 31-14 by Clemson and 31-10 by Iowa -- a combined 118-30 margin of loss -- the Chickens wound up with a 7-6 record.
With salaries like those of South Carolina coaches, Gamecock fans should expect better. But I guess over there at Billy-Brice Stadium in Columbia, you just don’t get what you pay for.

Well, I guess as a donor it’s good thing that I didn’t seek your advice before sending my check. I’d debate it with you but I’ve learned better over the years.
This blog makes you look foolish.
Go put on your orange coveralls, saddle up the mule and giddy up on back to Hooterville.
What a waste.
