Frustrating year for West Florence baseball
It's hard to lose any game, but one-run games can drive a coach crazy. The West Florence baseball team has played four Region 6-4A games and all have been decided by one run. The Knights have lost three, however, and that's probably the toughest stat.
West is competitive in the region, even against the best teams, but as coach Kleinknecht said, they just need those one or two key hits late in games.
They played very well against Conway, and really rattled their ace, who threw 55 pitches in the first inning and allowed four unearned runs to cross the plate.
West's pitching was in top form. Hunter Gregg consistently threw strikes as did Spencer Matthews. The loss I'm sure was especially tough for Matthews, who had five near-perfect innings of work before allowing the winning run in the 11th inning.
West has a senior-heavy team, and dropping to 1-3 in the region is tough to come back from. But since they're so close, it wouldn't surprise me if they got on a little run and found a way to get into the playoffs.
