From Tandy to iPod

It’s difficult to believe how far technology has come in such a short amount of time.
When I was in elementary school, one of my teachers would take us to Johnsonville High School’s computer lab. I think they had Tandy computers from Radio Shack, maybe TRS-80s, but I could be wrong. That was a long time ago. And I know we used those big floppy disks.
Using the Tandy, we learned how to type and there were programs that helped us with our math skills. When we got done with our work, we could play computer games if there was time left in the class.
Now, it’s about 20 years later, and I’m writing a blog that others can read and comment on, if they choose. To be honest, I’m still trying to figure out what exactly a blog is — everything I’ve read and heard about it makes it seem like an interactive journal. I’d never really paid attention to blogs until last year, yet I know someone who’s just a few years younger than I am who has been blogging for several years.
I think my favorite piece of technology, so far, is the iPod. I love being able to carry so many songs with me in such a small device.
When we were kids, we used to tape our favorite songs off the radio to make a mix tape. If you played the tape too much or recorded over it too many times, it would wear out.
I used to wish there was a way to have just the songs I liked playing on the stereo, but without the commercials and annoying disc jockeys.
It’s even better than I thought it would be.

Oh, the joys of high technology. My first computer was a Commodore 64. It was great for word processing and playing the inevitable computer games, i.e., Donkey Kong and Q-bert.
I was heart-broken when it died. But I learned the risks of using monitors with inadequate shielding.

Blog : interactive journal : : iPod : portable hard drive

But I still plan on getting an iPod. It’d be almost like carrying all 500+ CDs everywhere I go.

I love my iPod. And I loved playing Qbert back in the day, but I was never very good at it. I was better at Frogger - but I played those games on the Atari. I didn’t realize they had computer versions of the games.

When I was in elementary school we would play Oregon Trail on our Apple computers!

I remember playing that game! I think we also played something called Dig Dug.
