Friday in the Garden

My garden has been crowded lately, mainly because of the garlic and onions... but the garlic started to flop over this week, meaning it is ready to be harvested.

I planted the garlic in November, and it grows through the winter. It spends the spring developing the bulb underground, and when it starts to get hot, the leaves turn yellow and it starts to flop over. I have 30-40 garlic plants in my garden, so I will have enough to last through the year. The reason my garden is getting crowded, is because I planted tomato plants and pole beans between the garlic and onions. Once I get the garlic and onions out, there will be a little more room to move around in the garden.

Here is one of the onions that I took out today:

I'll let the onions stay put, and harvest them as I need them, unless they start to flop over like the garlic has. Finally, here is my haul from today (minus the garlic. I will leave them outside to dry, plus it is best to leave garlic dirty). The onion; three radishes (my radishes are HUGE this year, these are the size of baseballs!); and a basket of green beans. I get this many beans every other day.

I hope my garden is as productive as yours! I’ve been hesitant to plant garlic and onions because I’m afraid they’ll take over.

I’ve picked two small baskets of strawberries so far. I should have some blackberries and Hungarian wax peppers ready to pick before long.

The catnip I planted is growing strong, as is my basil, rosemary and lemon balm (but I’m pretty such my cats done’t care as much about those last three herbs).

I’ll have to wait and see about all the other stuff I planted, but so far, so good.

Fresh fruit, veggies and herbs are the best! There’s something therapeutic about working on a garden, too.
