Florence Tonight
School is back in, which means venues around the area are finally pumping some life back into their weekend entertainment. It's good a thing, blogreader, because there's only so much karaoke I can take.
If you're staying around the Florence area this weekend, may I make a few local musical suggestions? I'm not imposing, am I?
Wonderful. I hate to impose.
Brooklyn musician Benyaro comes to the Midnight Rooster in Hartsville. If you're averse to Jack Johnson or Cat Stevens or really any singer-songwriter who may, at times, verge on acoustic muzak - then don't go. But if you're apt for a little caffeine-soaked nirvana, looking for a little meditation time and a nice comfy seat in which to do it - Benyaro will be a joyous, serotonin experience for you. Listen to him at myspace.com/benyaro
Columbia band Hot Lava Monster brings their tidal wave-sized rock with the theatrical vocal work of Patrick Baxley to Apple Annie's tonight. There's something be said for pigeonholing Hot Lava Monster in the Immediate Rock genre just for the pleasure of watching them blow it to smithereens. Alcohol added to this would surely result in a truly ecstatic state of mind. I'm not trying to push you into anything, blogreader. I would never do that. I'm just stating a fact. If you don't believe me, check out myspace.com/hotlavamonster
Local singers Lucia & Levi will be appearing at Red Bone Alley this Saturday. I've heard good things about this duo and, although I've yet to see them live, I feel confident after hearing enough folk mention them to give their Saturday night performance at Red Bone a thumbs up.
North Carolina band Blackglass storms into Murphy's Nightlife tonight and Saturday. They specialize in '80s stadium rock. We're talking Mötley Crüe, Guns N' Roses (A LOT of Guns N' Roses) and the ilk. The lead guitarist even looks a bit like Slash. They're in constant rotation at Murphy's (nearly every three months, it seems like), so if you can't see them tonight or Saturday - don't worry. They'll be back some time soon. Never heard of them before? Do some research at blackglassband.com
For a bit sweet southern funk flavor, Ten Toes Up comes to Creekratz this evening. Not since the Allman Brothers has a band with two drummers managed to sound so gosh-darned nice. When Josh Gregory slaps a conga along with BJ Craven's psychedelic sweet tea electric reverberation, it's like breathing in deep on a humid summer night in Charleston. They're an island band floating in space. Listen to their latest at myspace.com/tentoesup
Last but not certainly least, Aroma Underground will have their Grand RE-Opening on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be giveaways, 103X will broadcast live and tickets for a Katy Perry concert at the House of Blues will be given away.
For more local events and bands, check the On Tap section in today's 8 Days A Week.
