Florence gets new sweet shop

Did y’all know Florence now has a store that sells custard and Italian ice?

I didn’t, until yesterday, when my friend Lizzie told me about it. It’s called Rita’s (Ice-Custard-Happiness). I’d never heard of the store before.

It’s in the shopping center on Irby Street, the one that has the PetSmart and Big Lots. The building the shop is in used to be a Chinese restaurant.

So, anyway, Lizzie and I went to Rita’s today to try the custard. She got vanilla with sprinkles, while I got plain chocolate. It was pretty good. I’ve only had custard a couple of times, both when I was in North Carolina. I think one of the places I went to was called Kamm’s Custard Shop, in Asheville.

Custard tastes similar to ice cream, but it seems to have a smoother texture. Maybe I’ll try the watermelon Italian ice next time.

For more details about the store, visit http://www.ritasice.com. I noticed they didn’t have the Florence location listed on the Web site, yet. I think the store is open until 10 p.m. most nights.

I’m just excited Florence opened up something that wasn’t a buffet setting or BBQ.

Italian ices are awesome: fruity and refreshing. I got some at Whole Foods not long ago in NC. I haven’t tried the custard before, but I will take my kids there and we will sample it all. Wonder if it is better nutrionally than regular ice cream? Seems like it would be.

Why is all of a sudden, all of the blogs are about food? :-(

I went with my mom to Rita’s as well over the weekend, and I tried a sample of the chocolate custard. It’s good, if you’re in the mood for something thicker than ice cream. She was so excited about it because the commercial on the radio sounded so good! wink
Blogs about food are fun! But I think so because my husband is an executive chef smile

The reason I said that about blogs being about food is because I started weight watchers. Anytime we start a diet, all we see on commercials and anywhere else are things about food. LOL

Isn’t that always the way it happens? When I’m at the gym, I’ve noticed that the channels on the TVs show a lot of fast food/chain restaurant ads.

As far as the nutrition goes for the custard and Italian ice, they have the info on their Web site. I didn’t take time to check it all out, but I would guess that the regular Italian ice would be fat-free, but would probably have sugar as one of, if not the, main ingredient. But when we were in the store, I noticed they also offer sugar-free Italian ice.
