Florence city councilman touts Obama
Florence city councilman Billy D. Williams traveled to Myrtle Beach on one of four buses that U.S. Congressman Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., chartered to bring Pee Dee residents to the debate.Williams supports U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and said he hopes the nation sees the change the candidate is trying to bring to the country.
The candidate would ensure that “we all get a fair shake at government” regardless of race.
Nonetheless, Williams, who is black, said he doesn’t expect race to play a part in the upcoming election “because we have a well-qualified candidate who we are supporting, and I think that speaks for itself.”
Shortly before the debate, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Williams said the assassinated civil-rights leader “always will be our leader.”
“It’s a new day. … He got us here, now somebody’s got to carry it on,” he said.
He anticipated economics to be the top issue at the debate, with health care also among the biggest topics.
