Flooding rain just to our east
The clouds that have lingered for the past several days finally broke this afternoon, giving us a few hours of late afternoon sunshine. Even with the cloudy skies, we have seen very little rain over the past few days. The clouds gave up some light rain and drizzle along the coast Sunday and Monday, but aside from that, most areas have been dry.The clouds have been rolling in from a storm system that is slowly moving up the coast. Most of the rain stayed east of Horry and Georgetown counties, but as the storm moved north, that heavy rain moved into North Carolina east of Wilmington. Pender County took the brunt of yesterday’s heavy rain, with over 10 inches of rain in some areas.
This heavy rain closed many roads on Labor Day, and several roads were washed out. The heaviest rain fell in just a few hours time, overwhelming drainage systems. The rain ended Monday evening, but some of the flooding lingered into Tuesday, causing some Pender County and Carteret County schools to go on a 2 hour delay. Some roads were still closed this morning. Highway NC 210 will remain closed for a few more days as the water continues to recede. Late Tuesday afternoon, water was still 2 to 2 1/2 feet deep over NC 210.
Both New Bern and Hatteras broke daily rainfall records with over two inches of rain. Here is a list of some of the rainfall amounts:
