Fisch Tank: Taneyhill needs a new challenge

After one wet and wild weekend in Clemson, Death Valley is getting ready for an encore act. Friday and Saturday Memorial Stadium will play host once again to the most viewed action between the hash marks in the Palmetto State. As the SCHSL high school state championship games take the field. But like the Gamecocks and Tigers game that unraveled last Saturday, it was a game in Orangeburg the day before that had a similar storyline.
In the Class A Division I championship game, Chesterfield put a choke hold early on Carvers Bay, just like Clemson did against USC. And like Clemson, Chesterfield’s head coaching situation is in question. IPTAY and their faithful happily want Dabo Swinney back in Death Valley, as do the Golden Ram backers with Taneyhill. While Swinney is almost certain to have the interim title removed, Coach T has probably coached his final game for the gold and blue.
Before Chesterfield fans get into a tiff, let me tell you Taneyhill has met every expectation that was placed on him. He brought a team from being third in the county to the top. Three straight title game appearances, with back to back rings and like any potential free agent; you have to strike while the iron is hot.
Coach T has been a great proponent for the Chesterfield community, through his coaching, connection with his players and staff, as well as his media accessibility. As much as it would be great to name the stadium after him and watch him turn into Joe Paterno or Bobby Bowden, I highly doubt it will happen.
He’s got plenty of options that will come his way in the near future, but you would have to think the college game is where he belongs. For those that think Carolina Forest would be a good fit, think again. Coach Drew Hummel is a good coach, but he doesn’t have the talent.
My advice for the Chesterfield faithful is to be happy for what Coach Tanneyhill has provided and hope the legacy he leaves behind is one of continued success. All you have to do is refer to your neighbors in Cheraw and remember Fisher DeBerry. Success can continue.

He’s coaching at least one more year at Chesterfield. It’s a shame that he does not have his degree. I’m sure it would open doors in the college ranks.
