Fisch Tank- Spurrier leaving?
Thanks for diving into the Fisch Tank! What a fun topic to discuss, who will be relocating and become a Head Coach somewhere else.
We’ll start with an off the wall coaching movement. Steve Spurrier to Michigan, is it possible? No, the ole’ ball coach loves the south, he likes to golf, and he can’t dish it out to the SEC every year up there. Yes, his wide open passing attack at Michigan would be more formidable than at South Carolina. Yet, it’s too cold and too much pressure. You have to believe Spurrier is trying to cement his status as a great head coach, and by building up a program it becomes a lot easier to do, than taking over a built program.
What about Spurrier to LSU, if Les Miles leaves for Michigan? No, the same principle applies in program building yet, Spurrier was already passed up for the job decades ago and I don’t see the Bayou Bengals offering up memberships to Augusta for him. Plus I would think LSU wants a more youthful head coach. If they keep watching their head coaches leave they’re going to want an all out commitment, something Spurrier doesn’t share. You’re not going to find him in the film room at 7 am nor are you going to see him hitting it hard on the recruiting trail. He’s a figure head, as is Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno, with a philosophy of let the assistant coaches handle that stuff. His job is more in a management capacity.
But look at all the jobs opening up at Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Nebraska, Michigan, SMU, and Southern Miss. Don’t forget the possible job openings as in LSU, and Tennessee. Wow, talk about some big paychecks that will be handed out. Well what about Clemson? Should Tommy Bowden go? No, not this year, why would the Tiger faithful want to be second fiddle to the Arkansas job. Bad year to fire Bowden, plus they have talent coming back. If he doesn’t win the diluted ACC next year then bag him. The coaching carousel will be interesting to watch this off season, but sit back and relax palmetto state college football fans your coaches aren’t going anywhere.
