Fisch Tank - National Champions?
Thanks for diving into the Fisch Tank. The BCS final rankings came out today and Ohio State will be playing LSU for the national championship. In a year that was more off the wall than Stephen King’s thoughts, is this really it? I believe LSU is a legit pick, but the Buckeyes? The same team that got steam rolled last year by Florida in the very same game. They lost a ton of talent and they play in the impure Big Ten. When I say impure, I really mean snotty. They don’t have a championship game, because it would only hurt their chances of getting to the big stage. Sorry Georgia fans, but you have to win your conference before contending for the national title. Throw the Pac-10 in this class as well; I believe every conference should have a championship game, whose ever left can play for a title.
A playoff system, don’t get me started, but the short and skinny is we need a playoff system. One that incorporates the BCS, so they can still constitute that it works. Which we all know is not true. It seems like every year they are making a modification to it. God forbid Georgia backed into the game the way OSU did following the West Virginia and Missouri loses. I know nothing is perfect when it first begins, but a playoff system would allow the people that care to justifiably call a program a national champion. The plus one model could work, but make it a true playoff by getting twelve to fourteen teams involved. It would be more fun watching it unfold than debating about it. Plus you could reward number one and two in the BCS by giving them a bye week.
Here is a look at my BCS bowl picks:
Orange Bowl: Georgia vs Va Tech: a Peach Bowl rematch of last season that was close until the fourth quarter. Plus it puts the two teams snubbed for the national title game against one another.
Sugar Bowl: Hawaii vs Missouri: Chase Daniel takes on Colt Brennan. This would be a high flying affair, or it would be the "Who Really Cares" bowl. But for the city hosting the national title game a couple of days later, it would offer the other cities more competitive matchups.
Fiesta Bowl: West Virginia vs Kansas: well one of these bowl games has to be boring on paper. The added incentive is that neither team really proved anything this year, yet they still have the records to be here so send them to the desert.
Rose Bowl: Southern Cal vs Ohio State: a true Big Ten and Pac-10 match up, that way conference loyalists can see a game that brings back nostalgia. Also, it will force Ohio State to prove something! It would also sell a lot of sweaters. (Pete Carroll and Jim Tressel)
National Championship Game: LSU vs Oklahoma: This would be a great game, Bob Stoops against Les Miles, and two awesome defenses colliding. A rock ‘em, sock ‘em old school championship football game, where defense will decide who walks or limps away with the national championship.
What are your thoughts? Tell me if I am off my rocker or if you agree.
