Fisch Tank: Hay NASCAR Speed It Up

I’ve taken a couple weeks off from writing down my thoughts on the world of sports. Giving me time to sit back and admire as well as question an array of efforts.
SPRINT CUP
Let’s rev it up with NASCAR and start with the Sprint Cup Series because lets be honest, the season is just too darn long. 36 races over a span of 10 months, not including the shootouts, testing, qualifying and happy hours, the season is longer than a school year. So in the spirit of the class room I’ll make some notes. I understand we’re in the heart of NASCAR country, but even the die hard fan can’t spend every Sunday glued to their television to watch the race. Darrell Waltrip even said this week, they should tighten the schedule.
The economy is causing teams to join forces, leaving the smaller teams to look like debris on the track with no yellow flag in sight. If you think D.E.I, Hendrick, Childress, Gibbs, and Rousch Racing are dominating now, just wait. Dodge is talking about pulling out of NASCAR and sponsors are becoming harder and harder to come by. Plus it doesn’t help the casual fan, who struggles with bills week to week to show teams turning laps around an oval and burning the same fuel they can barely afford.
My solution is to make the Chase for the Championship five races with ten teams, and eliminate three teams every two weeks and in the last race make it come down to the final four. After the eliminations, re-stack the points and put it into a shootout format. Then you will have nail biter action. Also they need to bring the final race to NASCAR country and not in South Florida by rotating the location like the Super Bowl. Oh and they need to shorten the season to twenty two to twenty four races.

MLB Playoffs

It’s no secret I love baseball, and I especially love the fact the Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series. Yet the playoff games took way too long and games start too late. I remember as a kid watching Saturday baseball in the afternoon, and with TBS, the Braves would play day games. Fast forward to the present, why can’t the demographic baseball is searching for get in touch with the national pastime? They’re in bed! Its men playing a kids game, and kids have almost been eliminated from watching baseball like the Royals in April. The post season and World Series is the crown jewel of the sport and the only kids that can stay up and catch an 11:30pm finish are out on the west coast.
FOX television is based on the west coast and the start and finish times work perfect for them. Just like ESPN is based in Connecticut and has the finger on the pulse of the northeast. FOX can only see what is right in front of their face.
My solution is to make the games start at the regular season game time of 7:05 and incorporate at least one day game a playoff series.

Those are just two things I have on my mind, but if you have a different point of view feel free to chime in.
