Fisch Tank: Errors kill the Chants
Alex White's domination of Coatal Carolina's offense should have been today's top story but it was not. It was the six errors and the tightness of the middle infield that stole the storylines and the game from CCU. Tyler Bortnik started it off in the first on the very first batter of the game and then Rico Noel followed suit in the second. Both were routine plays they have made a hundred times each this season, but both led to runs coming home. Head Coach Gary Gilmore, refused to give an opening comment following the Chants 9-4 loss in his post game press conference. And when he was asked about the play of his middle infield, it's as if someone asked him a calculus question. He was befuddled and couldn't even work up the words for a good ten seconds. Finally he responded with "We would have gone 12-50 if we played the season like we did today, said Gilmore." (CCU is 50-13)To make things even worse, the umps got an ear full from the Chanticleer faithful and the dugoout. First on a suspect play at first, and then balls and strikes, and any baseball fan knows when you argue balls and strikes it's a one ticket to the showers. Here's the low down; in the middle of the eighth following a Chance Gilmore strike out looking, Bobby Gagg and Joey Haug gave the umpires a piece of thier minds from the top step of the dugout. Leading to a two for the price of one ejection. Ulitmately both are suspended for four games according to NCAA rules.
As for the overall pitching; Coach Gilmore eluded to the fact his pitching staff isn't as deep as North Carolina's. No offense to Gilly, but everyone knows that, the Tar Heels staff is the best in the country. I would have stuck with the Alex White excuse on why they lost the game. White is considered to be one of the top three players available in next years Major League draft.
Speaking of draft, I'm befuddled about Bobby Gagg's situation. The ace of the Chants wasn't even selected on Thursday or Friday. He led the country with walks per inning this season. I can't answer why his name was called, is it his velocity, or attitude? I would think not, there maybe an underlying issue in the Gagg situation I am not aware of.
Game Two:
What should you expect, well one is for Adam Warren not to be Alex White, and you can expect 100 degree temperatures again to cause nausea. I am taking a gamble in saying this, but I think you'll see Nick McCully tomorrow, despite him telling me he is going to pitch game three. Remember no win tomorrow equals no game three, so McCully will make an appearance. Also count on Pete Andrelczyk to toe the rubber. You can't have your two hottest pitchers on the bench in the most important game in your programs history.
