Fisch Tank- Chants Round Ball

Thanks for diving into the Fisch Tank.

College football is in the lull of bowl game practices and college basketball is starting to hit full swing. At Coastal Carolina, it’s the first year of the Cliff Ellis sunset era and the Chanticleers are responding fairly well to him. Last night they dropped a tough one to UNC- Wilmington, yet Coastal showed a great deal of character in battling the Seahawks back and forth for the lead twelve times until the eight minute point of the second quarter. In the game before against future Big South conference foe Presbyterian, the Chants wouldn’t let go of the lead they built in the first half and hung on to win. The point is they are a battling team, they fight for every bucket and play solid defense. Unfortunately as Ellis said yesterday,” we’re too small.” Their tallest player is a freshman at 6’10 who is getting no playing time, and the next three tallest are 6’8 and buried so deep on the bench you would have to move the Gatorade cooler to find them. Still with the smaller forwards and shooting guards Coastal has on the roster they can hang with teams. They strike me as the Villanova type, four guards and a forward, scrappy with solid shooters. They have a winless opponent coming up in Canisius on the road, followed by another shot at the Seahawks at home. If Coastal Carolina can go three and two, or four and one in their next five before they start conference play it would be a big boost. This team was picked to finish fourth in the preseason Big South standings. Yet, as wide open as the division is right now anybody can take it. It’s premature to start talking about the big dance, but CCU is playing exciting ball right now. They could end up becoming the Big South surprise of the year.
