Fisch Tank: Baseball Report
Thanks for diving into the Fisch Tank. It’s past the midway point of the baseball season and now we’re getting ready for the home stretch. That feeling is being shown on the diamond for a few Pee Dee and Grand Strand minor league standouts, who are trying to solidify a call up next year.Former Coastal Carolina closer Pete Andrelczyk has made the biggest impact this season out of the bullpen for the Jamestown Jammers. The Florida Marlins fifth round pick got ripped out of rookie ball last Friday and was promoted to the single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers. Andrelczyk has scene action in two games in the South Atlantic League. In his first game he allowed his only homer and earned run of the season despite striking out three in the inning. In his second appearance the south paw picked up the save.
The 2007 Big South Player of the Year David Sappelt is also making the Chants proud. Sappelt is tearing up the Pioneer League, especially at home in Billings, Montana. “Sapp” is hitting .452 at Dehler Park, and overall he’s second on the team with a .330 average and 48 RBI. He leads the Mustangs with five stolen bases. A call up to the Dayton Dragons could be in the near future if he keeps it up.
Dock Doyle was another member of that historical 2008 CCU squad. The Conway native has picked up his average over the last two weeks, raising it to .275. His clutch numbers are great, batting .364 with runners in scoring position.
Andy DeLaGarza has been a guy to keep an eye on with the Augusta Green Jackets. The former Coastal pitcher has earned two saves in consecutive opportunities. DeLaGarza is 6-1 overall with 58 strikeouts in 58 innings of work. His ERA has moved from above three to 2.95 over the last week. He should be a guy the San Francisco Giants have an eye on to promote soon.
And the final guy of the week is Hartsville’s Jordan Lyles. He has been solid for an eighteen year old finding his way through his first professional two months. Lyles is 0-1, which means absolutely nothing. He’s started in six games and in 21 innings he has 25 strikeouts. Now that means something. Opponents are hitting on .226 against the former Florence Post 1 player. His last outing on Tuesday was his toughest. The first place Elizabethton Twins earned three runs off Lyles in 3.2 innings of work. Raising his ERA to 3.38 for the 15-15 Greenville Astros.
If you want to know about a player or teams minor league situation don’t be afraid to drop a line into the Fisch Tank. I’ll reel in what you want to know.
