Fisch Tank

Thanks for diving into the Fisch Tank.

This week we have some very interesting games on the docket.

Wake Forest vs Clemson
HUGE game for the Tigers, forget the trap, this is a must win. Clemson needs to play like it’s the playoffs. Look at it as: beat Wake and progress to play Boston College in the second round. Much like the post season, if the Tigers win, they move on to the ACC Championship game. The Deacons are coming in off a tough loss to Virginia, in which they missed a last second field goal. So they’re going to be fired up, but they haven’t beaten the Tigers in Death Valley in their last three visits. Clemson brings to the table the nation’s sixth rated defense, while the Deacons have the ninety-third rated offense. We know the defense will do its job, but which Clemson offense will show up? Cullen Harper and the boys looked horrific in the early going against Duke, yet in the end, Clemson torched the Blue Devils for 47. The key this week will be for the Tigers to go to the air. Harper leads the ACC in passing efficiency, and Wake has a solid run stopping defense. Plus, you never know which C.J. Spiller will show up. It’s up to Arron Kelley and the wide-outs to carry the work load for Clemson. Wake Forest may be the defending ACC Champions, but this game will go to Clemson, if its offense decides to show.

Florida vs South Carolina
Gator Bait? Steve Spurrier will find a way to keep this game close. He has put the fear of god in Urban Meyer the last two years. I would love to stay impartial but it is difficult in this one. Tim Tebow is Batman, Percy Harvin is Robin and together forget about it! It could be a BAMMMM….SPLATTTT….BOOOOMMMM affair.
Here is how I see it: I said it after the Vandy game. USC will not win the rest of the season. Spurrier can’t pick a quarterback, the defense can’t keep picking up the offense and Blake Mitchell can’t pick up a secondary receiver. I am big fan of the Gamecocks defense, I just don’t think they can stop the Tebow battering ram. They don’t have the talent on defense they did last year to keep the game close. Williams Brice at night could be an interesting twist to the showdown, but I doubt it. I am amazed at how Spurrier can get his team up for this game the past couple of years, and play over their heads. But the Ole’ Ball Coach is going to be hearing Mr. Two Bits (it’s a Florida thing) in his dreams Saturday night.

Gardner-Webb vs Coastal

Tough to call! I am going with Coastal. Why? Because, the Chants need a win desperately, to save some face. I talked to Head Coach David Bennett on Wednesday about getting fan support. He says he loves the fan support, but, he added, “I wish we could get our fans to sit in the visitor stands.” (Cheap Plug for Coach)
Back to the game. A reason to watch will be Defensive End Bryan Johnson for the Bulldogs, who will more than likely be playing on Sunday’s next year. This game pits the pre-season offensive (Jerome Simpson) and defensive (Johnson) players of the year against one another. Plus it is the last dance for Simpson and Mike Tolbert at Brooks Stadium. The Chants are still looking for that defense that was supposed to lead them this year to show up. I have to believe they will, especially with the ring on the line. A win and their still in the Big South hunt, a loss and the jewelry run to Coastal stops.
