Fire safety advice
I talked with Florence Fire Marshall Ken Carr today about the tragedy in Scotland County, where four young children died in a house fire. He says firefighters are devastated when they respond to a fatal fire. And it's extremely hard to cope with the loss of a child.Carr says when it comes to fire safety, it's vital you have a working smoke detector in your home. Even if a child doesn't hear it, the parents should and can alert the children. You should test is regularly and chance the batteries at least once a year. If you don't have a smoke detector, call your local fire department. Fire departments are willing to help you get a smoke detector.
Carr stressed the importance of having an escape plan, and practicing it. The plan should include two ways out of your home in case one is blocked. He says it's important to keep stairways and your escape route clear of furniture, toys, and debris. And have a meeting place once you're outside your home. Fire Prevention week is October 7 - 13. The National Fire Protection Association these this year for Fire Prevention Week is "know Your Escape Plan."
Carr also shared with me these fire safety tips. If you have candles burning, when you leave the room blow them out. Never leave the stove while you're cooking. You should always take special care with smokers in the home. Make sure all smoking materials are properly disposed.
