Finally, I’m going to see a UNC/Dook game in person

Yes, I am fully aware that I misspelled Duke in the title of this blog. As a life-long Tar Heel, that's my right to spell Dook anyway I want. This is it! After 37 years of being on this earth, I'm finally getting a chance to see a UNC basketball game against the hated rival Duke. The game is scheduled for 9 p.m. in Chapel Hill Wednesday night. I have press passes and will have a really good seat for one of the best rivalries in all of sports. Before you USC/Clemson fans start yacking, I understand where I live and what's most important to folks in the Palmetto State.

Like Christmas Eve is to an excited child, that's what it's like for me today. I can not wait! I have had opportunities to cover the UNC/Duke games before, but for one reason or another, it didn't work out. I take a lot of ribbing from the newsroom folks about my love for the Heels and that's okay (Rusty Ray especially).

Though I am going to the game and am very excited, I am very nervous too. One of the Heels' star players could miss the game. Point Guard Ty Lawson sprained his ankle Sunday against Florida State and may miss the game. Could be a bad night for the Heels, but hopefully they'll pull through.

The torture part of this event will be trying to remain calm during the game. As a journalist, we are not supposed to have public opinions or openly pull for a team. I can't help it. I will however act as professional as possible while at the game. I surely won't act like I do at home when watching the games on TV. Can't scream out loud!

I will be posting a blog about my experience as well.

Here's to a great game, win or lose. This will be one of those days when I will say "I can't believe I get paid to do this!" GO HEELS!

Basketball….when’s football over?

Posted by  on  02/05  at  01:57 PM

Why don’t we talk when you can beat a team like THE Elon University.  Until then these are simply pre-season warmup matches.

And Newsfan…football’s never over.  Sports is the one topic that strings together all in life.  Soccer is the one sport that brings Europe together (or crickett), jai alai is the sport that brings South America together, Hockey brings…well, hockey doesn’t bring anyone together, and baseball brings America together…but football….football is the soul of a man.  A part of him that never lay dormant, or even gets put on hold.  A superbowl ring, a touchdown, or yes, even a first down sticks in one’s memory for an eternity.  Infact, when UNC-P eventually gets up to Division 1 and wins a championship…someone will rank it up there with the moment when their kids were born.  It’s a part of us Newsfan, and a part of everyone.  It’s in you, like Gatorade, you just need to find it…deep…deep down.

This is not Brian Formica.

First of all, Countertops, you’re not a long-timer News13 employee, so, as I am sure Patty Patty Burk Burk and E-Walters have explained, the “when’s football over” comment was a very funny moment of frustration in our newsroom a couple years ago.

Secondly—Hear, hear, Eric Walters! I got LAMBASTED for suggesting that UNC-Dukie was the biggest (and most important) rivalry in both Carolinas on this very blogspot, and, rightfully so, because I “failed to remember” where I live. But that doesn’t mean I’ve changed my mind.

For those of you scoring at home, Maryland beat UNC, and then failed to show up in the second half against the Duke boys.

Eric—enjoy yourself, and if you give a little shout, it’s okay. We know how much you love Carolina.

Patty Patty Burk Burk—I don’t know why anyone tries to help you.

THANKS RUSTY!!!!!

Eric, I will not waste any more of your valuable blog space with inside jokes.

I will say that I hope you have fun at the game…and remember that football may come and go, but news is constant.

Football is always constant.  That’s why they call it the Wide World of Sports.

And Rusty, come on, while I may be a little green, I still know the when’s football over…

And you so outted me!  NO ONE KNEW WHO THIS WAS!

hahahahahahha.

Eric- Enjoy the game.  Fun stuff.

I don’t know if you know this, but I cheered in college and Valpo got the chance to play Duke while I was there.  We played them at the United Spirit Arena in Chicago and I think we only lost by like 3.  Anyway, it was closer than anyone expected!

This year, Valpo played UNC at Chapel Hill.  I would have loved to go up there and watch the Crusaders battle against the #1 team in the nation.  I watched part of it on TV and we held our own during the first half- but there’s a reason UNC was #1!!

Tonight if you are flipping channels, Valpo is on ESPN 2, playing Butler in our new conference.  We’ll see how the game goes, but I am just excited to be able to see my team on TV for once!

Again, enjoy the game!

MELISSA!  You cheered?!  My cousin cheers although, thank goodness she’s not in this state, but she’s a little untalented, so it’s awkward and she can’t do it at the college level. What made you go onto WEATHER…from cheerleading?!  Shouldn’t you be a sports girl?

Oh well, anyway…GO DUKE!  There is no way with as deep as there team is that UN-stink will ever win that game.  I’m so sorry that you have to drive all the way up there to see them lose.  You seem like a nice guy, and that’s why I feel bad.  I talked with my friends about it, and they all say I’m wrong.  You need your point guard.  Poor Ty…

Cant wait to hear how the game went..

Say hi to Roy for me Pops.  You’ll have a blast, and if you get lost, just go to spend the night at Elon.  It’s right down the street.  This Phlorentine guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about, Duke’s gonna get crushed!  And I don’t normally say this, but I have to support the boss…

Go heels!

I hope they both lose.

Did the Tar Holes win?

Posted by  on  02/07  at  10:35 AM

Duke did win.  I was there in person and even though my team lost, I still enjoyed the atmosphere there.  It was awesome to be in the Dean Dome where over 21,000 people were screaming for their team.  I’m not making excuses, Duke won fair and square.  They played a really good game, the Heels did not.  I do look forward to the rematch in March when UNC is healthy at the point guard position.

I took away several things from the game.

1.  Tyler Hansbrough is officially one of my Top Two Tar Heels of all time….Raymond Felton is the other.  Hansbrough’s determination to score is unreal!  Watching him on TV doesn’t give a true reflection of how great he is as a college player.

2.  As much as I despise Duke’s Coack K, I do respect what he has accomplished in his career.

3.  I had the pleasure of watching two of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time on the sidlines last night.  Coach Roy Williams is a true gentleman too.

4.  I have never seen so many media folks at a basketball game in my life!  Over one hundred reporters, photographers, etc were there to cover the event.

Until March…..........

Yeah, that one kid from Duke shot a ridiculous amount of threes, think it was 6. Good game to watch though.
