Email from Jared Marine’s Uncle

Good Morning Mr. Lincoln:

My name is Ed Richardson. I am Jared Marine’s uncle. I grew up in Hartsville but, I now reside in Charlotte NC.

I played college basketball at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte and therefore I can relate as a former athlete. It is obvious to me that Coach Samuels is trying to sabotage my nephew’s opportunity to advance to the next level. It is absolutely beyond comprehension that an athlete could play for the same coach as long as Jared has played for Coach Samuels without the slightest sign of a prior conflict or reprimand and all of a sudden be dismissed from the team with 4 to 5 games remaining in his Senior year. If a problem at some point should arise a good coach would make a player run wind sprints, not allow him to start, sit him for a game etc., but to all of a sudden dismiss the player from the team shows there is a conflict unrelated to basketball and the Hartsville Red Fox basketball team as a whole. Coach Samuels actions to me would suggest he’s not a leader, not a good coach, he doesn’t care about the team, the remaining players, the school, his reputation in the community as most of all he doesn’t respect his best player.

I have mentored Jared to some degree as a former college athlete and an uncle. In spite of what anyone has said, Jared is not a controversial person. He does not talk back, he’s very respectful and he has never had an incident in his sports career to suggest the opposite. I come to Hartsville regularly and many people in the community have no confidence in Coach Samuels ability to coach and to further the careers of his players. You have to ask yourself at some point, what are his qualifications to coach? What is his background? Is he an educator? How accessible is he to his players? Why is he losing his best players and how many players has he helped to advance to the next level?

Now that’s the story that needs to be investigated and reported on! You will be surprised at what you might find or should I say the absence of what you might be looking for and expect to find. What are the qualifications of his assistants?

This is a terrible miscarriage of justice directed at a 17 year old and if this is allowed to happen Hartsville High School obviously doesn’t have the best interest of its kids to consider!

Thank you for reading this email!

kt…

Being disrespectful to Mrs. Marine doesnt make you any closer to being right in anyone’s eyes..it has just the opposite effect..you are wrong in so many ways..

No parent should be told that they will be the cause of their child’s demise..that’s just flat out cruel..and uncalled for..

Mrs. Marine has every right to like or dislike whomever she chooses to..including myself..

Any point that you wanted to get across has now been covered over by all of the hateful and hurtful words in your post..

I almost feel sorry for you…

KT, it’s interesting that you appear to want to know about me but you really don’t.  I had nothing but support for Aric the entire time my son played with the Hartsville program.  I was one of the few parents who raised money for the program, worked the concession stands at the games, and event called in stats for the coaches who didn’t see it necessary to do so.  Please, speak on what you know… obviously very little.  You proclaim that I never liked the coach and wanted him fired…  DID I EVER SAY THAT TO YOU?  And what does that have to do with the price of tea in China?!?!?!

Understand this, KT…  Jared is going to college to get an education - and that will be done with or without bouncing a basketball.  PERIOD.  What’s really sad is that you, and other adults, are so jealous and spiteful that they end up taking shots a kids, rather than going face to face with ADULTS.

The bottom line is…  men can’t handle a woman being involved, know as much or more and not afraid to get in their face and say so.  I can’t help it if your, or Aric’s mother, wasn’t involved in your extracurricular and academic affairs, if they were even worthy of being involved in.  If you’re a parent, then be a parent to YOURS and leave my parenting of my two to me!

Oh, and a word to the uninformed…  there are certified teachers who are also very knowledgeable of sports…  most of the coaches in the district are.

And another thing, KT…  Jared’s playing time speaks for itself.  Apparently Aric Samuels thought so too…  as Jared played anywhere from 28-30 minutes of every game!  He was named to the Chick-Fil-A All Tournament Team, The WPDE All Hoop Zone Team, listed as a top player to watch at both the Chick-Fil-A Classic AND the nationally acclaimed Beach Ball Classic, All Region, All State, Offensive MVP, Most Improved Player, Captain, Co-Captain, played with the most elite AAU teams in SC, rated by Bob Gibbons (national basketball evaluator) as a top prospect, already offered FOUR college scholarships and the offers are STILL COMING IN, etc., etc.

Aric Samuels has been heard in and around Hartsville saying that he was ready for Jordan Lyles and Jared Marine to leave so that he could coach the kinds of kids that he’s able to coach.  That screams incompetence to me.  He’s also taken shots at kids during practice because their upbringings aren’t as meager as his was.  That screams envy.

All that being said, it’s obvious you DON’T know as much as you THINK you do…

First of all KT you need to speak for yourself. Saying that “we’re” blowing him up as if he’s being recruited for the LA LAKERS (must be your favorite team, huh), as far as you know he could be but you would never know that cause you are too busy hating on that fact that he is in the spotlight and your not.

Taking personal shots at Audra clearly says you are someone that’s VERY jealous of her and her involvement with her son. What parent in their right mind wouldn’t be involved in their child’s education, or sports involvement? Just because Audra is looking out for the best interest of her child doesn’t make her a bad parent, it’s obvious no one did that for you :-(

No matter what anyone says Jared will continue his education with or without basketball. My concern is how do YOU know about how Ms. Marine feels about Coach Samuel, have you two talked and she shared this with you? Sounds like to me you are making an assumption and you know what they say about assumptions!

The only thing that you were right on was that it’s not Jared’s fault, finally you admit that but it is the fault of the Coach who just dismissed a “CHILD” from a locker room after what was said to be a violation of team policy without even knowing how the child would return home that night. Sounds a bit immature to me wouldn’t you agree KT??

As far as Ms. Marine’s college involvement, well little do you know a lot of parents do share a concern for their child when it comes to the team, obviously you know nothing about what goes on. Just cause it’s not in the public eye like it is in “High School” parents are involved. So that direct crack was so uncalled for! And like Audra said their are plenty of TEACHERS who coach sports, not YMCA employees who played for HHS years ago, and honestly I would rather have someone who teaches on a certified level to coach my child than someone who just works at the local YMCA. At least I know they will put academics before the sport and understand children on a different level than just the sport.

It’s sad to say KT, that you are just a bitter person who just wants to be in the spotlight on this whole thing, but at the end of the day Jared will be fine, he will overcome this unfortuante incident and he will get a GREAT education no matter what!!!!

A final point of interest, KT….  In the meeting with administrators, the coach had NOTHING but good things to say about Jared and how he was a good kid, never disrespectful, never cursed, never belligerent, etc.  When asked why he dismissed Jared, he alleged that Jared said bump you.  Jared told the administrators that he did not but rather asked why he was always blamed for losses when other players make mistakes too.  That’s when your beloved Coach Sam, who loves the kids and who acts like an “adult”, got in Jared’s face and threatened him by saying that Jared was about to make him lose his job in the Sumter locker room that night and told him to turn in his uniform and leave - he was kicked off.  THAT IS WHO YOU PRAISE?!?!?!  An adult who threatens kids?  Who was rude and disrespectful to me when I attempted to TALK to him about it as two adults!?!?!?  I question you and your judgment now (well, I did the minute I started reading your post)... Hope you’re not in a position where you have an influence on kids….

Having been the most skeptical individual involved in this discussion..thus far..

I have to admit that after hearing from the Marine family..especially Mrs. Marine..and her disclosing intimate details about this grave situation..

..and seeing the lack of discussion on the coach’s as well as the school’s part..

I am leaning closer and closer to Jared’s version of events that took place in all of this..

I do believe with all of my heart that Mrs. Marine is highly educated and very active in her children’s lives and activities..She doesnt strike me as one of those Mothers who would defend their kids even if they were wrong..

The entire Marine family that has posted here..has set an example of high standards and morals that exists in their lives..an example that many should follow..

Usually when someone has something to hide..they dont come across like Mrs. Marine..instead they hide behind a single standard issued statement..such as the school and coach have done..

I looked at this from every possible angle to see if there was some way that the coach was being mis-read..

It aint lookin’ too good for him at the moment through my eyes..

I think we owe this lady and her family our respect..if nothing else..for having the courage to come here and discuss this with us..

Again I would like to thank the entire Marine family for sharing this with us and being patient enough to let us come to our own conclusions!

Oh wow! This is craziness! I want to say something about the certified teacher comments because I was the one who originally brought that up. I think that anyone who works with children directly through school activities should be a certified teacher. When I was at HHS, ALL the coaches were also teachers (Dr. Burry was once Coach Burry). They taught English, Math, Social studies, etc.

My mother (Jared’s grandmother) has been a teacher for over 30 years.  I tell her all the time, I couldn’t do what she does.  She is TRAINED to deal with children at the elementary level. TEACHERS major in education.  That curriculum covers motivational techniques, teaching methods, in addition to the subject matter.  So while a NASA scientist would certainly be qualified to teach science, doesn’t mean that he/she should. I have a MBA and a BS in marketing, but I couldn’t teach high school marketing. Based on my background, I have the ability to teach, but not the proper attitude to teach.  I couldn’t fathom trying to deal with teenagers! I’m certified by (2) online colleges to teach in my field, and I can handle adults all day long. I know how to motivate adults, reason with them, etc.

My point with the comment about needing certified teachers is this: Trained educators need to work with our children. We are failing youth in this country in unprecedented ways. Our schools fall behind other industrialized nations. A coach in the NBA is NOT expected to do anything but WIN.  Their jobs depend on it.  High school coaches who are also teachers SHOULD care more about students receiving an education than WINNING. Above all, high school players are STUDENT athletes. That’s first and foremost.

Jared and my son will both graduate from high school the same day. Both of them will go to college. Even if I have to help my sister, or if she has to help me, both of our STUDENT athletes will attend college.  In our family, that’s a given…not something that will occur as a result of bouncing or carrying a football.
