Do you know South Carolina has a championship boxer?

I’ve been a huge fan of boxing since a kid. Growing up in Atlantic City, the site of a number of championship bouts and breeding ground for young amateurs, it was easy to learn about the sport.

Here in South Carolina, it doesn’t have the same presence or generate as much interest, but I’m proud to say that we do have a world champion fighter.

Paul “The Punisher” Williams is a two-time WBO welterweight champion born in Aiken. He began his training there and later moved his camp to Washington, D.C., developing into a tall lanky boxer with great movement, an outstanding work ethic and stamina that allows him to throw over 100 punches per round.

Standing almost six feet two inches tall, Williams is a southpaw with power, making him the most avoided fighter in the game.

He has won 37 fights, 27 by knockout, and has lost only once, but avenged it in a first round KO.

He finds it hard getting fighters with the heart to challenge him; so amazingly, he has defeated opponents in higher weight classes. In one round, he put middleweight Andy Kolle to sleep, then won the WBO junior middleweight championship in a TKO over Verno Phillips.

This past Saturday, I watched him easily defeat future Hall of Famer Winky Wright through 12 rounds in a middleweight contest. Keep an eye out for this kid.

The boxing legacy of Paul Williams should be intriguing if he goes on to win the middleweight championship.
