Dancing into the spotlight

So You Think You Can Dance is back!!!!! It began last Thursday on Fox with the first round of auditions and continues tonight for round two. I know all those American Idol fans out there think shows like this are just capitalizing on the talent show craze currently sweeping America, but when you look at it from a different perspective, you see things slightly different.

On SYTYCD, the dancers aren't competing for huge record deals or fame and fortune... the winner only gets $100,000, a (typically hybrid) small car and a small dancing contract through the show. I know, to most people on the street, that sounds pretty great, but remember, many of these people have been dancing their entire lives, attending classes and seminars to improve their skills.

Some of them were dancing as soon as they could walk, like winner of season two, Benji Schwimmer. His parents own a dance studio and he and his sister Lacey, as well as their cousin Heidi trained there. They have all three been high ranking contestants on SYTYCD.

This is a clip of Benji dancing a solo performance in season two:

Here is his sister Lacey and her dance partner on the show, Kameron, dancing to a Mia Michaels routine in season three. This is my all time favorite routine from the show.

This next routine won an Emmy for the choreography by Mia Michaels. The dancers and Benji's cousin Heidi and another finalist from the show, Travis Wall.

There are many styles of dancing featured on the show and the contestants must be able to master each style in order to advance in the competition. This is another one of my favorite group routines, choreographed by Wade Robson.

Season four promises to feature many talented dancers such as popper, Robert Muraine. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to adapt to other styles of dance, although in his own genre of popping, he is king.

And last, I leave you with an audition from a couple of ballroom dancers. I can't remember their names at this time, but during this routine, she was extremely ill. Imagine what she can be when she's healthy!

So, all of you Americn Idol fans left without good quality entertainment now that AI is over for this season, boot scoot your boogies on over to SYTYCD, you might just find a new talent competition where the people actually want to win.

What? No comments? Mr. Mookie and Wolf must be on vacation…

“Boot scoot your boogies?” Sounds painful!

Posted by  on  05/28  at  03:36 PM

Just trying to give some alliteration… : ) Do you watch SYTYCD? Mr. Mookie and Wolf seem to have jumped ship on me today.

Posted by  on  05/28  at  03:39 PM

No, I can’t tear myself away from The Discovery Channel or Cartoon Network.

But I betcha my mom does! She seems to be hooked on those network TV reality shows. I’ll have to ask her.

It’s a good one. I don’t usually watch reality shows, excluding America’s Next Top Model (for the cheese factor - those girls are funny, but I don’t think they mean to be), and SYTYCD. The dancers are really talented people just trying to catch a break to gain some attention. They’ll still never really be famous, but they’ll be able to make a living doing what they love. It shows in every episode, how much they want to live their dream.

On vacation? Not me..

It is the “mating season” around my house..

I like to wait til the hottest part of the year..so when she turns me down..I aint really that disappointed..wink

I dont watch much reality TV..however I did enjoy that “Mickey Mouse Afro Dude” last night..and the lil guy with Down Syndrome..

That big girl with the socks on that did that Jazz type dance..funky yet flexible..she could easily become my next ex-wife..smile

Posted by  on  05/29  at  04:11 AM

I loved the little DS guy! He had such spunk! He was actually a pretty talented dancer in his own right. The mickey mouse afro dude though, holy cow he was bad. I though Mary did herself proud the way she handled it. I thoroughly despised the little beauty queen though. Her voice just irritated me.

Have you heard from Mr. Mookie? He didn’t get arrested or anything did he?

Posted by  on  05/29  at  11:34 AM

I havent heard from the Mookster..but I recall him saying something about the family vacation..and the boat..in one of his posts..

Hopefully he is kicking back on the boat sucking down a cold one..and thinking of us..wink

I know one thing about that show...there are a few gals on there with legs to die for..and can dance like you aint never seen..

The lil beauty queen was more than I could handle..I think Nigel called it Stepford Dancing..He is as cool as Simon Cowell at times..*LOL*

Posted by  on  05/29  at  03:21 PM

Yeah, he pegged it perfectly. She did look a little “I’m a lucky girl, I’m a lucky girl, I’m a lucky girl...” huh? Please tell me you get that reference to one of the Stepford sequels (the robotic children, I believe)… I can’t be the ONLY person in America who watched it.

Posted by  on  05/29  at  03:54 PM

Oh I got it alright..I knew exactly what he meant..

So far my favorite was the lil man with Down Syndrome..the spirit that guy carries around with him is unbelievable..

I told my wife.."Man I hope he is good”..after seeing his intro footage..She said “He probably wont be..the poor thing”..within seconds after he started dancing she was withdrawing that statement..she was impressed with his moves and his drive..I was over the moon with the lil fella when he finished dancing but was moved to near tears just listening to him afterwards..

What a guy!

The conversation at my house was nearly the same. I was glad the judges were honest, but kind to him. I would have really been angry if they had been mean. But luckily they’ve only been mean thus far to people who deserve it. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds. If the try outs are this good the rest of the season should be awesome. I was a little disappointed to hear a rumor that choreographer Wade Robson might not be returning to the show. I hope they don’t replace him with that awful Mandy Moore. I can’t watch her cheesy little bobbleheaded self each week. At least Wade choreographs interestingly to make up for his “artistic” foibles.

Ok, I am trying to follow these blogs, but if the Florence Morning News changes their web site one more time, that’s it for me. It seems like it’s different every week.
I don’t watch the dancing show, but do teach special ed, so I have a lot of down syn. kids. They love to dance, feel affection, etc.
And keeping up with Lost is a major thing right now. LOL

Posted by  on  05/29  at  09:58 PM

Mandy Moore is along the same lines as Paula Abdul...they both suck severly..and cant seem to speak in full sentences..

I didnt get a chance to watch it all last night..just the first girl from Atlanta..she was pretty awesome..I do however have it recorded..so hopefully I can finish watching it tonight..

Becky...why dont you just book-mark the blog in your favorites..then you wont have to go to the Morning News website everytime you want to check out the blogs..

Ok, good idea.

Welcome to blogging, Becky! My friend here at the office is a fan of Lost. She was just telling me about the season finale last night and when she asked with some degree of exasperation “Now what am I going to watch on Thursday’s?” I answered with a big grin… So You Think You Can Dance? : )
I’m converting the world, one person at a time.

About the boy with DS on SYTYCD, his love of dance was obvious from the moment he stepped on stage. And his reasons for going on the audition (to prove that disabled people can do anything the desire) were stupendous. He truly is an ambassador.

About our website, this should be the last of the changes for now. But I agree with Wolf, just add our blog site to your favorites. It is scnowcommunity.com. That will take directly to the blog homepage. SCNow.com will take you straight to our news homepage. Thanks for reading and happy posting!

Wolf, make sure you check out Brandon Bryant from last night. He is one of the most amazing dancers I have ever seen. His style is a tweak, a very small tweak, effeminate. But since his training focused primarily on ballet, I guess that stands to reason. He is a very dynamic dancer. He could very well go all the way in the competition.

I’ll keep an eye out for Brandon when we watch it tonight..Thanks for the heads-up..

Mookie didnt get arrested..he is posting on other blogs..

From one of his posts..I have learned that he is fat..old..has short hair and doesnt wear hip huggers or bell bottoms..

(Note to Jackie): He aint Drew Carey..*LOL*

Just like I always had him pictured in my mind..wink

Poor Mr. Mookie. I just read one of his posts (and yours) on Nick’s blog. I concur. I bet he still owns a powder blue suit with a ruffled shirt somewhere in the back of his closet… Ya think?

Posted by  on  05/30  at  01:24 PM

Right along with 3 inch platform shoes..wink

I would have loved to have known him in the disco days..

I will have to say this for the ole boy...over the years..he is the funniest person I have ever crossed paths with on-line..never met the guy..but he makes me laugh like nobody else can..

The guy has talent..smile

Posted by  on  05/30  at  01:28 PM

Amen! Preach it Brother Wolf! : )

Posted by  on  05/30  at  01:30 PM

Your post reminds me of what made Mookie famous..

His opening line used to be..

“I hate going to church”..he would go on to explaining in detail about how his wife makes him go..I literally had tears streaming down my face reading his posts..

He reminds me of a modern day Archie Bunker..

I wish I could be just like him..smile

OK. Need everyones help. My son found a cat. We can’t keep it. If you know of anyone who has lost or is looking for a cat, let us know.
It is a grey and black male and has no collar.
He’s not very friendly and he’s not house broken.
I took a pic and provided a link.

Nice, Mr. Mookie. Really nice… It’s a good thing I wasn’t drinking anything when I looked at that pic… I would have ruined my keyboard!! : )

Of course coming from you, I should have known it had to be something funny like that.

Guess you had to try to keep up with Wolf’s image of you as the funny one. Are you two related? You and Wolf, I mean. Not you and the ‘possum. ; )

Posted by  on  05/30  at  03:22 PM

Don’t get me started. You know what will happen?

Wow, I hope you’re not having that kind of day. Especially the one with the deer butt sticking out of the windshield. That looked a little painful. : )

Well I’m heading out for the day. Hope all you guys have a great weekend!
