Dancing into the spotlight
So You Think You Can Dance is back!!!!! It began last Thursday on Fox with the first round of auditions and continues tonight for round two. I know all those American Idol fans out there think shows like this are just capitalizing on the talent show craze currently sweeping America, but when you look at it from a different perspective, you see things slightly different. On SYTYCD, the dancers aren't competing for huge record deals or fame and fortune... the winner only gets $100,000, a (typically hybrid) small car and a small dancing contract through the show. I know, to most people on the street, that sounds pretty great, but remember, many of these people have been dancing their entire lives, attending classes and seminars to improve their skills.
Some of them were dancing as soon as they could walk, like winner of season two, Benji Schwimmer. His parents own a dance studio and he and his sister Lacey, as well as their cousin Heidi trained there. They have all three been high ranking contestants on SYTYCD.
This is a clip of Benji dancing a solo performance in season two:

Here is his sister Lacey and her dance partner on the show, Kameron, dancing to a Mia Michaels routine in season three. This is my all time favorite routine from the show.

This next routine won an Emmy for the choreography by Mia Michaels. The dancers and Benji's cousin Heidi and another finalist from the show, Travis Wall.

There are many styles of dancing featured on the show and the contestants must be able to master each style in order to advance in the competition. This is another one of my favorite group routines, choreographed by Wade Robson.

Season four promises to feature many talented dancers such as popper, Robert Muraine. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to adapt to other styles of dance, although in his own genre of popping, he is king.

And last, I leave you with an audition from a couple of ballroom dancers. I can't remember their names at this time, but during this routine, she was extremely ill. Imagine what she can be when she's healthy!

So, all of you Americn Idol fans left without good quality entertainment now that AI is over for this season, boot scoot your boogies on over to SYTYCD, you might just find a new talent competition where the people actually want to win.

What? No comments? Mr. Mookie and Wolf must be on vacation…
