Coastal getting a steal at RB

So Travis Small is heading to Coastal, and the Chants now have a great running back that, for the moment, didn't cost them a dime.

You can probably thank David Bennett for that.

Bennett's close connection with Cheraw probably helped the Chants land Small, and now they have a potential great running back in the making.

The fact that Small did not get picked for either the Shrine Bowl or the North-South game is ridiculous. He's the state's second all-time leading rusher, and one of the major reasons why the Braves made Columbia their home away from home for three of Small's four years.

As far as Division I colleges not calling, it's a case of Small not really fitting a certain mold that most big programs have for running backs. He's 5-foot-10, although most schools probably thought he was around 5-8 or 5-9, and doesn't have blazing speed or a big build.

But numbers don't lie. Reaching 7,109 yards in a career is no fluke, no matter what level of competition you are playing against. I've covered enough Cheraw games to know that he can make a game-breaking play on any down.

Now the Chants have a weapon in the making. Put in two years of college weight rooms and training, you might see him break a few rushing marks in the Big South.
