Clinton supporters excited for debate
Barry and Carrington Wingard traveled to Myrtle Beach along with fellow Florence couple Dr. Larry and JoEtta Chewning. All of them support U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., for reasons including veterans’ and women’s issues and the economy.“I have the confidence that she’ll be able to take us where we need to go,” JoEtta Chewning said Monday in Myrtle Beach.
Barry Wingard said Clinton has an “unsurpassed” record on military issues. The senator also has shown a willingness to work across party lines with senators such as Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to ensure medical benefits for the National Guard and Reserve, he said.
Clinton’s tenure as first lady gives her experience with the economy and the ability to forge positive international relationships to rescue the country from a looming “major recession,” Larry Chewning said.
Carrington Wingard said she’s excited to see the debate, where the candidates’ personalities really show.
“It’s like you’re seeing history being made,” she said.
The Wingards and Chewnings said, however, that they don’t have anything negative to say about the other Democratic candidates in the debate.
“Certainly any of these three would be better than anything that the Republicans have to offer,” Carrington Wingard said.
The event is bringing international attention to South Carolina. Barry Wingard said he was interviewed by a Japanese TV crew visiting Florence.
Myrtle Beach leaders are helping the city and South Carolina make a good impression on the world, Barry Wingard said.
“They put on a good show,” he said.
