Chris talks global warming
Let me first say that "global warming" is very real. There's nothing controversial to me about whether or not it is really happening. Melting icebergs don't lie. The cause is where the controversy lies. I'll save that for another blog. Now what about the warm weather this week? Is it due to global warming?
Not a chance. You simply can't define global warming based on any one weather event. Just ask the folks about 300 miles to our north in the Ohio Valley back into the Plain States who might have an argument for global cooling after getting bombarded with repeated doses of winter weather while we enjoy repeated doses of sunny weather and 80s. See, that's how the earth works. If it's warm in one part of the world, you can bet your bottom dollar that somewhere else is equally as cold. The same goes for precipitation. We're in the middle of our 3rd driest year on record in the Southeast while Washington and Oregon have been hit with torrential rains and devastating mudslides. This is an example of one of the most fundamental laws of physics: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The weather is just like that--only on a much larger and complex scale.
That said, let me add that NOAA released a report released this week. The study found the global average temperature for 2007 to be the 8th warmest since records began in 1880. Here's the kicker: 7 of the 10 warmest days since 1880 have occurred since 2001! Wow, if that isn't a trend, I don't know what is. The big question remains...why?
