Building a Humane Domain
The Florence Area Humane Society is gearing up to hold its second Bone-E-Fit on May 1, so I thought this would be a good time to remind everyone about some animal welfare issues in our county (and surrounding areas).First of all, tickets are on sale for the humane society event, which organizers hope will raise about $100,000. Last year's Bone-E-Fit raised $89,000. The humane society is about halfway to its $850,000 goal for building a new no-kill shelter.
Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at Fisher Jewelers and Porter Gift Shop, as well as by calling Florence Area Humane Society President Jayne Boswell at (843) 229-7790. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Huggins, 405 S. Coit St., Florence.
Meanwhile in Effingham, county officials are waiting on bids for a new county animal control facility. Florence County Council has allotted $700,000 for the the facility, which will be built to allow expansion for additional office space and animal pens as money becomes available. The facility will have a surgery room where spaying and neutering can be done.
Sometimes people get confused about which facility is which; the animal control facility in Effingham is a county-run facility that holds many feral animals captured by county officials. They really need a lot of help there, as well, and several people have made donations. Checks can be sent and made payable to: Florence County Animal Fund, 180 N. Irby St., MSC-G, Florence City County Complex, Florence, SC 25901. Donations can be delivered in person to county offices on the eighth floor of the complex.
While I'm on the subject, I was curious about how our readers feel about this story on state Sen. Kent Williams, who adopted dogs from the Marion County animal shelter and returned one that became pregnant. I will give no opinion on this story, but I wanted to generate some discussion.
Hope everyone has a great weekend, and watch out for your four-legged friends.
