Britney vs. Presidential Politics
It’s bizarre- the two topics topping the news right now. The Iowa Caucuses and the New Hampshire Presidential Primaries have dominated the national news, right alongside the questioned mental health of Britney Spears. Coverage of two topics on the morning news, daytime talk shows, 24 hour news sources, entertainment news and evening news programs. Two topics, so totally different from one another. Or are they? Let’s see… complaints about the unfairness of the media, emotion-packed moments, media swarming, hurling questions and clamoring for photo ops. Now, which topic was I talking about? Maybe… a little of both. The scrapping of the candidates for President is without question very controversial. And many of those who follow the candidates are quite star struck. I’ve already recognized a bit of it as volunteers get very starry eyed when they just talk about the possibility of actually seeing their favorite political candidates in person here in Myrtle Beach. There’s some real star power in politics nowadays.
Sometimes news about the actual “stars” is so outrageous, it dominates even mainstream news, not just the entertainment shows. But when our interest in those stories dominates our minds as much as, or more than, real news about everyday people, we have a problem. I, for one, am very sad for Britney Spears. At the same time, I’m also so concerned for her children, and for young girls who follow her and her younger sister (now pregnant) as idols. Let’s hope that the domination of the Spears girls in the news will provide some important lessons for parents and their children. And meanwhile, let’s hope the election of the next U.S. leader keeps building momentum and interest, enough to evoke involvement and prompt a strong turnout at the polls.
