Breast Cancer Event Hits Home
I am blessed to involved in an upcoming event to help those fighting breast cancer. It's the "Brides and Pink Ribbons" event, coming up this Sunday, October 7th at 2pm at the Carriage House in Litchfield Plantation. It's a bridal fashion show, and lots of News13 staff and on air personalities are involved. It benefits the "Caring in Our Lifetime" organization.Being involved in this event hits very close to home. My mother passed away only a year and a half ago, after fighting hard to beat cancer three times in her life. Her second cancer was breast cancer, and each time she fought the dreaded disease, it took its toll. She succumbed to throat cancer on April 17th, and I miss her so much I can hardly stand it. She fought so hard, and her spirit was so positive and strong until her very last day. My father was by her side everyday, feeding her through a tube. Even in her last weeks, she was sure she could turn it around, at least that's what she wanted me to know. Everyday.... for 8 months, and then there was no fighting left in her. Everyday, and only through the Lord's strength and peace, was I able to get on the air and broadcast the news.
So many wonderful women around me have gotten that same horrible news... "you have breast cancer", and have fortunately survived. Just 13 years ago, at the age of 28, my younger sister was diagnosed. Her daughter was just a toddler. This cancer was agressive, and through miraculous treatment at MUSC provided by amazing doctors, today, she is a cancer survivor. She and her family survived this cancer. Her doctors tell her she's a miracle, and that the others who were diagnosed at the same time she was are no longer with us. Her beautiful daughter is now 14, and is an amazing young woman. Praise God.
So many more have heard the same news from their doctors- my aunt, my father-in-law's "best girl". Now, a new very dear friend is battling breast cancer with all her faith and might. She has her very weak days, while her family and friends come around her to hold her up, pray with her, and try to hold it together.
Cancer touches every one of us in some way at some point. So many advances have already been made by researchers and doctors to tackle this tenacious disease. Maybe one day, cancer will be no more. That's what "Caring in our Lifetime" is all about. Again, I am blessed to be a part of the upcoming event, and maybe it helps with this important cause. I know that many of you know the same pain of witnessing a loved one fight cancer, or maybe you're fighting for your own life. May you be blessed with a wellspring of peace, hope and healing as you face each day.
