Bonds’ indictment delivers another black eye to pro sports

Going, going, gone?

Barry Bonds, Major League Baseball's all-time homerun leader, is staring down a criminal trial and possible prison sentence.

On Thursday, the U.S. Attorney in San Francisco announced Bonds had been indicted on five counts of lying to a grand jury and for obstructing justice. If he's convicted, Bonds he could face up to 30 years in prison.

Bonds' indictment comes three months after he passed Hank Aaron on the all-time home run list.

It's just another sad chapter in the steroid era that has placed a dark cloud over baseball for the past decade.

Some say America's once-proud past-time has become yet another symbol of what's wrong with our society these days.

I know, I know, I sound like my grandfather, but when you look around, it really is depressing.

From steroids in baseball to Michael Vick, to the NBA referee that bet on games he called- what will it take for professional sports to clean up their acts, once and for all?

The answer - there's probably not one.

As long as athletes get paid millions to play a game, the pressure to succeed will always be intense.

And when you've got more money than you'll ever be able to spend, I guess it's easy to end up blowing it on everything from fighting dogs, to drugs, to prostitutes.

Still, it doesn't make it any easier for fans like me to watch how some of today's mega-ego athletes are giving the sports we grew up black eye after black eye.

Maybe I'll become a wrestling fan.
