Blogging the Outdoors: Charity Golf
I just returned from the Traces Golf course in Florence after visiting with the fine folks out there putting on a charity golf tournament. Troop 5 of the South Carolina Highway Patrol was hosting their 13th Annual Make-A-Wish golf tourney. What a GREAT tournament! Unlike in years past, I wasn't able to play this year for various reasons. Usually my team consists of three other wanna-be golfers John Martin, Cecil Chandler, and former SC State Rep. Jim McGee. We're terrible, but we have a great time and those around us do as well. Someone has to provide the comic relief! It's a great time of the year to play golf and see old friends, but it's even more important to recognize what these troopers do for the Make-A-Wish foundation. These guys and gals work tirelessly to help raise thousands of dollars for a great cause. All money raised goes straight to the Make-A-Wish foundation so children with terminal health conditions such as MS and Leukemia can have an opportunity to experience life's many joys. Trips to Disney World, trips to see the Braves play baseball in Atlanta, or any other wish they may have can be achieved through the generosity of these troopers and the people who donate their money to the tournament. Without people like Lt. Jo Nell, Trooper Sonny Collins, Trooper Chuck Lowder, and the countless others involved, some children who will soon die from health complications would not have the chance to see their dying wish come true.
Remember these Troopers the next time you are pulled over for speeding. They are not the jerk's who make your car insurance go up, they are human beings who help terminally ill kids have one of the happiest times of their lives.
Keep up the good work Troop 5!
