Bad case of spring fever

I have a bad case of spring fever. It happens every year. I don't know about you, but I believe whoever started the idea of taking a break in March or April and calling it spring break is/was a genius.

When I was in elementary school, spring break was an excuse to visit my grandparents. With four of us kids in my house, my parents were all too happy to send some of us somewhere for at least a few days. That week of school-lessness was fondly filled with sleepovers, me going somewhere, and someone coming over. No books. No teachers. No routine. Just fun, well, at least as much as I was allowed.

Then, in junior high, my dad took over the farming from my granddad and suddenly spring breaks meant more time spent on the farm .... particularly, planting tobacco. But I always sensed there was something more out there...

And then, one spring break when I was in high school, I took a trip with the French Club from South Florence and headed to London, Brussels and Paris ... C'est La Vie! From then on, I was sunk. I knew the purpose of all spring breaks. Travel. Get aways. Far aways...

I was a goner. I was a world traveler. I was smitten with the spring break bug. And I've suffered from it ever since and quite often can't contain myself. And then, without realizing it, somewhere along the way, I grew up. Adulthood has no spring breaks, unless you're smart enough to become a teacher, a profession I am convinced that is built around the perpetual ability to "spring break."

It is, after all, a verb: To spring break. I spring break, you spring break, he spring breaks, she spring breaks....And like the pull of a full moon on a tide, I feel it. Gotta get away...Gotta break...

And so, once again, I have a bad case of spring fever in need of a spring break. And to top it off, there's a full moon 'a coming...Where to go? What to do? Again, reality bites. No time to break this year. I guess breaking out into spontaneous songs about other people "California Dreamin'" is the best I can do ... Spring break. Maybe I'll settle for rearranging the furniture ... If you can't take a trip, might as well rearrange something!

How does a full moon and a bad case of spring fever affect you?
